Crickets New Years Resolutions

With the New Year finally getting under way I thought we should make a list of resolutions for each of the test nations

For example:

India - Gotta go fast. Historically to be a truly dominant team in cricket you need world class fast bowlers. India has the best pace attack in their history right now and needs to capitalize. My advice is to build depth and load manage.

New Zealand - Ties are lame anyway. Don't want to lose in a super over or from a boundary count back? Don't let it get to that stage. You also don't want to constantly lose the first test of a series and be forced to rely on your fight back credentials. It's time to shake the "almost but not quite" tag.

South Africa - A house divided. Unfortunately the biggest story for South African cricket this year has been off the field. With Smith and Boucher on board things are starting to look up but there's still a lot of healing left to take place between the board, coaching staff and players. South Africa it's a year for reconciliation and you're probably sick of hearing that.

England - Structural support. Great white ball results and the miracle of Headingly have over shadowed what was a miserable outing for England in tests in 2019. To turn it around this year stop collapsing for under 100 in an innings. Say it with me: Tim Murtagh can't hurt you anymore.

Australia - Ok maybe we do care about T20s. You had a pretty good 2019 Australia, at least compared to the black hole that was 2018. But you also let someone else win the CWC. That's not like you. Time to redeem yourself by winning your first ever T20 world cup.

Sri Lanka - Do it for Mickey. Ok you couldn't beat Pakistan and provide everyone's favourite grumpy school teacher the memetastic revenge we all wanted. Hopefully Mickey Arthur can lead the much needed coaching revamp in Sri Lankan cricket. But you'll need to actually follow his advice. Or pull a Watson. Your choice.

Pakistan - Home sweet home. Cricket has returned to Pakistan and now we need to keep it there. In order to do that you need to not only be safe but appear safe. Boards will be guided by perception as much as anything when planning future tours. I'll settle for no less than 100% safe. Anything more is just gravy. Also justice for Kaneria.

West Indies - We will rise again. I imagine every West Indian player from the last 2 decades is sick of being compared to THAT team. But unfortunately I doubt it's ever going away. If you want to be dominant again you can start by not being easy beats. Become a potential banana peel for touring sides like you were to England and build on that. Oh and Holder > Stokes.

Bangladesh - Embrace the new wave. Whether it be agreeing to a pink ball tour match in India or creating a T20 league to rival any outside the IPL Bangladesh has surprisingly been quick to adapt to changes in the cricketing landscape while other boards languish behind. Now it's time to adapt that flexibility into on field results and finally force other cricketing nations to take you seriously. You know how you play at home? Like that but everywhere. Also if you overhear talk of spot fixing for the love of God report it.

Afghanistan - Please sir, may I have some more. Right now Afghanistan is a tier below the rest of the test nations (minus Zimbabwe and Ireland) but the good news is you'll only get better the more you play. The bad news is financial considerations mean you don't play much. So for 2020 it's your resolution to prove you can draw a crowd, provide a challenge and are worth playing for the other full member nations.

Zimbabwe - Ever heard of Lazarus? Ok Zimbabwe cricket isn't quite dead but it is on life support. So get better. That's how it works right? Where's my "thanks I'm cured"?

Ireland - Good craic. Remember when you bowled England out for 85 runs? And then lost by 143? I'm not sure if I should be angry with you for losing from that position. Or proud that you were ever in that position in the first place. Maybe I'm holding a team new to the test arena to unfairly high standards. Maybe high standards for 2020 are what you need to improve. Also $$$ so you can play more.

Getting in to Cricket?

Hey r/cricket, I'm in America and being that the USA isn't renowned for its cricketing, I am having a hard time finding where to start. I really would like to try it out. Honestly I have a few friends who we could just bowl and bat together. My main concern is bats/balls/stumps. Within a relatively small budget ~ $120-150 USD, what should I get for those items? I'm only posting here because legit no one that I know, knows anything about the sport and what kind of materials to purchase.

Cheers!

Unsolicited advice from a nobody for The Black Caps going into the SCG Test.

Latham: Channel Cooky. Shelve the drive, make them bowl to you. Occupy the crease, build left/right partnerships with the rest of the top four.

Blundell: As you were.

KW: Plan A seems to be to come in and pressure the bowlers by scoring. Plan A is not working. Hunker down, bat time. First 30 balls played in the V or left alone, no exceptions.

Taylor: Ditto to KW.

Nicholls: Been a touch unlucky, got a couple of very good balls very early on. But if you get a start, don’t throw it away.

CDG: Bowling has been great, given natural limitations. Maybe bring the slips a step forward. Better shot selection required when batting. When you’ve just hit a boundary, for Pete’s sake block or leave the next one.

BJ: You’re overdue. One vintage BJ innings, please (just a Cowen with a kiwi accent, really).

Santner: Assuming you play, build on the batting foundation you laid in the last innings. Bowl flatter and faster to the top order, only float it up as a variation.

Southee: Good areas for longer with the new ball. Always going to be tough once this period is over, so get the new ball right. Batting has been disappointing. Support the established bat if there’s one there. If not, swing away.

Wags: As you were, you crazy, sexy beast.

Henry: Assuming you play, hit your lengths early and hope for a bit of luck. You’re certainly due some in this format. Remind us all how good a bat you can be, too.

Somerville: Assuming you play, copy Garry as much as possible. Give it a rip, toss it up. You’re 35, might as well have a proper dip.

Jamieson: Don’t know much about you, honestly. I know you’re about 7 foot 10, so bang it in I guess?

Who will be the next bowler to reach 500 test wickets after stuart broad?

My guess is probably kagiso rabada. He's under 25 and will have more than 200 wickets after this series ends. Broad is on 476 and although nothing is sure we can safely say that he will reach 500. I would say either ashwin or lyon but they are both 34/33 and although I do know that spinners tend to play longer they still need 125 odd wickets.

New on SI: Freddie Kitchens Fired by the Browns After One Frustrating Season

After an active offseason, notably landing WR Odell Beckham Jr., Cleveland came into the 2019 season with sky-high expectations. But the team’s 6–10 season, marred by unrest on and off the field, led the team to end Kitchens’s tenure.

Freddie Kitchens went 6-10 as the Browns’ head coach.

After being promoted from running backs coach to interim offensive coordinator to head coach over the course of a year,

Freddie Kitchens has been fired by the Browns. The team closed out their disappointing 6–10 season with a loss to the Bengals, the worst team in the NFL this season.

Kitchens was hired to coach the running backs at the beginning of 2018, and was then elevated to offensive coordinator, his first-ever coordinator gig, just a few months later when the team fired former head coach Hue Jackson and offensive coordinator Todd Haley

After those coaching changes in 2018, Cleveland finished the season 5-3, and with Kitchens calling the plays in the latter half of the season, rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield made significant progress. In Mayfield’s first six games of the season with Haley calling the plays (starting five of those six), the QB completed 58.3% of his passes for 1,471 yards, eight touchdowns and six interceptions. In the last eight games with Kitchens calling the shots, Mayfield completed 68.4% of his passes for 2,254 yards, 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Despite his lack of play calling experience, Kitchens’s connection with Mayfield gave him an advantage over other coaching candidates. GM John Dorsey took a risk on hiring the inexperienced coordinator, but the strategy made sense. He hired the coach who had already proven he could get the most out of Mayfield, the No. 1 overall pick of the 2018 draft, and the team’s most important player in determining Cleveland’s future success.

But Dorsey also admitted that Kitchens was not on any of his lists of head coaching candidates that he brought with him when he took the GM job in Cleveland in December 2017. Kitchens acknowledged the criticism that he was too inexperienced to land a head-coaching gig and that he was not the popular choice among more established candidates.

“Am I ready or not? I do not know,” Kitchens said, after being named head coach. “I mean, were you ready to be a parent? I know this, they had confidence enough in me that I would figure it out and I would get the job done.”

But after a disappointing 2019 season of questionable play calling and a lack of control over his players, it looks like Kitchens wasn’t quite ready for that jump.

When Dorsey traded for Odell Beckham Jr., the expectations for Kitchens and this Browns team grew exponentially. And one of the biggest critiques of Kitchens is that he failed to maximize the most talented roster that Cleveland has seen in years, with the frustration between the star players and their coach visible throughout the season in public spats between some of the star players and the head coach.

Receiver Jarvis Landry was caught arguing with Kitchens on the sideline during a loss at Arizona. Landry explained that he was asking Kitchens to get him the ball, because he’d only caught two catches for two yards at halftime.

A few weeks ago, Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer reported that Beckham is unhappy in Cleveland and has been going up to opposing coaches and players before games saying, ‘Come get me.’ Beckham later refuted that report, but he’s also had a strangely quiet season on the field, his worst season statistically.

In Kitchens’s first outing as head coach, an embarrassing 43-13 home loss to the Titans, his team committed 20 penalties. Those penalties continued to add up as the season wore on, peaking with the infamous meleé on Thursday Night Football when Browns defensive end Myles Garrett ripped off Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph’s helmet and then swung it as Rudolph’s head and hit him with it. The team ended the season with the third-most penalties in the league.

A few weeks after that brawl, Kitchens was photographed wearing a t-shirt that says, ‘Pittsburgh Started It.’ Sure, it’s just a t-shirt, and there are plenty of other choices Kitchens made to seal his fate. But the head coach of a team wearing that shirt in public (and allowing a picture to be taken!) embodies the complete lack of discipline that became the identity of Kitchens’s leadership. And it reflected even worse on Kitchens when compared to Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, the coach on the other side of that fight, who refused to answer press conference questions about it. The Kitchens experiment lasted only one season, and that shirt will be his legacy.

On the morning of the Browns game at Arizona team in Week 15, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that, “barring a horrific collapse or circumstance to end the season, it appears the Browns will be moving forward with Kitchens.”

But in the final three games of the season, Cleveland lost 38-24 to Arizona, 31-15 to Baltimore and 33-23 to Cincinnati. The final loss was particularly humiliating, against a one-win Bengals team, as Mayfield threw three interceptions to finish the season with 20 interceptions and 20 touchdown passes. Yep—that certainly checks the box for an end-of-season collapse.

Since owner Jimmy Haslam bought the Browns in 2012, he has hired four different full-time head coaches (not counting Gregg Williams as the interim coach last season). Four coaches in eight seasons.

Consistency would probably do the Browns some good, but Kitchens joins Rob Chudzinksi as the second one-and-done Browns coach in Haslam's tenure. One season isn’t nearly long enough for a head coach to prove himself, but the Kitchens era is over. With a quarterback on a rookie contract and expensive, talented pieces around him, the Browns don’t have any time to waste.

New on SI: Browns Fire Freddie Kitchens After Disappointing Season

The Browns entered the 2019 season considered to be potential Super Bowl contenders, but will instead be looking for a new head coach after Freddie Kitchens' dismissal.

The Browns entered the 2019 season considered to be

among potential Super Bowl contenders. But after a 6-10 season, littered with inconsistent play and plenty of bad press, head coach Freddie Kitchens has been fired, the team announced Sunday.

"I would like to thank Freddie for his dedication and efforts this past season," general manager John Dorsey said in a statement. "We are disappointed in our results and feel a change is necessary. Freddie is a good man and good football coach. We wish he and his family nothing but success."

Kitchens was in his first full season as the Browns' head coach after being promoted this past offseason.

On the field this year, the Browns' offense was in the bottom third of the league  and second-year QB Baker Mayfield failed to develop the way that many expected.

Kitchens and his team also found themselves in the news throughout the year, for all the wrong reasons. Under the rookie head coach's watch, DE Myles Garrett was suspended indefinitely for striking Steelers QB Mason Rudolph with Rudolph's helmet. The coach was later spotted wearing a "Pittsburgh Started It" in the weeks following the incident. Safety Tahir Whitehead was released after directing death threats at fans on Twitter following a loss, reports surfaced that Odell Beckham Jr. was dealing with a "painful sports hernia injury since training camp and  Mayfield got into a spat with a local reporter, among other notable moments.

After the team's Week 16 loss to the Ravens which eliminated Cleveland from playoff contention, Kitchens insisted that the Browns were on their way to becoming consistent winners.

"We’re really close, and sometimes that gets lost in the shuffle," he said. "But we know how close we are. Our players understand how close we are. Our players understand how they could do better. Coaches understand how they could do better, and whenever we get those things flipped, it will change."

But that change will not occur under Kitchens' watch.

After falling 33-23 to the Bengals in Week 17, the Browns will now look to hire their eighth full-time coach since 2008.

New on SI: Report: Redskins Remove Bruce Allen From Head of Football Operations Role

Washington has more than 100 losses and no playoff victories since Bruce Allen was hired as GM in 2009.

Bruce Allen was hired as the Redskins' GM during the 2009 season. After 10 years, enough is apparently enough.

Allen will no longer be running the team's football operations, according to JP Finlay of

NBC Sports. ESPN's John Keim later confirmed the news. According to ESPN, however, it is possible Allen will continue as the Redskins' president and help owner Dan Snyder try to get a new stadium built. His future role is not official yet and remains "somewhat unsettled."

In the 10 years since Allen was hired, Washington has more than 100 losses and no playoff victories. The team has fired two head coaches during his tenure and has started more than 10 different quarterbacks.

When Allen joined the team, he was the first person hired by owner Dan Snyder to hold the GM title, a notable milestone after a decade of various front office arrangements that usually center around Snyder and Snyder's friend, Vinny Cerrato. He has been the primary decision maker in Washington's football decisions since the firing of Mike Shanahan in 2013.

The team will now look for a new person to head up the organization's football operations.

Despite rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins showing positive flashes at times, the 2019 season was largely one full of struggles for Washington. Jay Gruden was relieved in early October after the team's 0-5 start, its worst open to a season since 2001. And the team will again be last in the NFC East, finishing with a losing record for the third straight season.

The 3-12 Redskins finish their season on Sunday when it looks to end the Cowboys' year as well. Kickoff is set for 4:25 p.m. ET.

New Zealand fan rant - is this a fair assessment?

This tour has been a train wreck, naming the squad for Australia before a England series that starts at home, are the selectors mad? Stead coming out and saying Santner is a match winner for us - in limited overs yes, he is outstanding. In tests he is complete garbage. In the first test in Sri Lanka earlier this year he was pathetic, couldnt bat there either. We swapped him out for Somerville who was way better in the 2nd test and even contributed great lower order runs. absolutely unbelievable Ajaz Patel and Somerville were not included - especially since Somerville has experience playing in Aus and is much taller and gets good bounce and even Patel as he bowls good line and length pretty much every ball. Holding off Lockie Ferguson (the one guy who can consistently bowl 145+) till the 1st test in Perth when its 40 degrees and we are bowling first - injured after 11 overs. Why didnt he debut in the meaningless England home series ? and then having Trent Boult injured for Perth who has one of the best stats in the world in pink ball tests.

I don't even want to get into the batting, KW what the f*** was that yesterday? tbf he is out of form despite his 100 in Hamilton where he was dropped 3 times. I have no problem with him though, probably our best ever batter and has been carrying our batting since the world cup. Hes probably fed up walking out the score 5/1 every innings after having to field for 100+ overs. Winning the toss and bowling in Australia was just the icing on the cake - never bowl first in Australia unless you are South Africa and playing in Hobart where its overcast and cold for the whole game!

Anyone know how we can import Rabada and Bumrah? and some batters

I'm not hugely experienced on tactics, but with fine weather ahead and 2.5 days to go with a huge lead, why wouldn't they just send them back in and continue the momentum?

New Zealand Depression Thread

I have been a New Zealand Cricket fan since I can remember, and this is undoubtedly the best NZ cricket team we have ever had. Two world cup finals in the last two iterations of the tournament, unlucky not to win the last world cup, a couple of all all time greats of NZ cricket playing in the same team (Taylor, Williamson) - it should be a great time to be a NZ fan.

So why are we so shit in Australia? Are Australia that much better than us? You rate yourself as a cricket team after playing the best, and when we play the best we fall apart. Every time. On paper there isn't much that separates these teams however in reality there is a huge gulf between the two. We are being outplayed in every single facet. Batting, bowling, fielding, on field banter - its like the senior club side playing the afternoon grade 40 over side, its fucking embarrassing. Is this what other nations feel like when they play the All Blacks?

Just needed to get my frustrations out and ask other Kiwi's what your thoughts are on why turn into a bunch of flogs when crossing the Tasman (although when Aus come here we get shat on too).

New on SI: Would the NFL Even Allow Antonio Brown to Play for the Saints?

If the wide receiver, who worked out in New Orleans today, even signed with the team, chances are Roger Goodell would place him right on the commissioner’s exempt list. Brown could file a grievance, but it would likely lead to failed outcomes—preventing AB from ever seeing the field.

The New Orleans Saints have called an audible in the unusual situation involving free-agent wide receiver Antonio Brown.

The team worked out the 31-year-old, four-time All Pro unexpectedly on Friday. A workout also doesn’t mean that a signing is forthcoming, only that a team is evaluating a particular player. Still, Brown’s workout is newsworthy because no team had previously extended such a request since the four-time All Pro was cut from the Patriots, and no team was expected to. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the team is merely doing due diligence on available wide receivers.

The Saints, who are 12-3 and in first place in the NFC South, already employ one of the game’s best wide receivers in Michael Thomas—so far this season, he has an NFL-record 145 catches for 1,688 yards with one game to play. Brown, who caught 104 passes for the Steelers in 2018, would give QB Drew Brees another elite receiver to throw to during the upcoming NFL playoffs.

However it’s no secret that teams are scared away by Brown’s thorny status with the NFL, and his often disruptive and insulting use of social media.

Brown’s workplace troubles and the (unproven) allegations against him

The months of July, August and September were disastrous for Brown’s NFL career. Brown drew the ire of both the Oakland Raiders, who

traded a third- and fifth-round draft pick for him in the offseason, and later the Patriots, who picked him up after Oakland cut him. With the Raiders, Brown suffered frostbite on his feet in a cryotherapy incident, missed practices without permission, confronted general manager Mike Maycock, recorded and posted a private phone conversation with head coach Jon Gruden, and filed two grievances in an attempt to wear a helmet that his own union had deemed unsafe. This all occurred over an extraordinarily tumultuous two-month period.

Brown’s time with the Patriots wasn’t quite as chaotic, though it lasted only 11 days. While with New England, Brown allegedly sent threatening messages to a woman, and creepily included photos of that woman’s children in one message. After the Patriots cut him on Sept. 20, Brown filed a salary grievance against the team

Most significantly, Britney Taylor, who had previously trained Brown, sued him in September for alleged sexual assault and other misconduct. Last month, Brown countersued Taylor for defamation and tortious interference. Taylor has met with NFL investigators but has not, as far as known, provided sworn testimony about her allegations. Brown has also met with NFL investigators and denies Taylor’s claims.

Other women have also accused Brown of wrongdoing. He allegedly partook in threatening, harassing and, at times, violent acts. Those allegations were uncovered by former Sports Illustrated writer Robert Klemko, who obtained hostile and inflammatory texts allegedly sent by Brown to one of his accusers.

Brown’s recent troubles extend to acrimonious relationships with workers and employers. He has been accused of not paying people who perform professional services on his behalf.

He has also used social media to mock, and then apologize to, Patriots owner Robert Kraft. Brown has ridiculed other people on social media, including Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Brown has also accused the NFL of racism and implied that he is being boycotted.

As of this writing, Brown, who has been a free agent since New England released him on Sept. 20, is not subject to any form of NFL discipline.

Brown could argue the NFL has effectively suspended him

Despite it all, Brown has not been charged with a crime, let alone convicted of one. Also, accusations that Brown committed violent acts have not been made while under oath. This means accusers and other witnesses aren’t at risk of committing perjury if they knowingly lie about Brown. That’s not to say the accusations are false or that Brown has behaved ethically or lawfully. Accusations, though, are not established facts until they are actually proven.

It’s also telling that the NFL hasn’t disciplined Brown. The league isn’t obligated to punish him within a certain period of weeks or months, but Brown and the NFLPA can rightfully ask why the league hasn’t completed its review. Taylor’s claims have been known for at least three and a half months. The league has also interviewed both Taylor and Brown, and reviewed texts and other evidence. It’s not clear what else needs to be determined in order for the NFL to make a decision.

The league has also enjoyed the clear power and discretion to punish Brown. Under Article 46 of the collective bargaining agreement, a first-time offense for domestic violence carries a baseline six game suspension. Other types of misconduct can carry suspensions of lengths as determined by commissioner Roger Goodell. If Goodell concluded that Brown engaged in domestic violence or other forms of punishable misconduct, he could have already suspended Brown. The suspension would begin to run when and if Brown returned to the league. The lack of suspension suggests that Goodell isn’t certain that Brown engaged in wrongdoing.

Complicating matters are reports that should any team sign Brown, Goodell would immediately place him on the paid leave exempt list. This is an unappealing prospect for any team, and arguably acts as a de facto—and indefinite—suspension of Brown. While Brown is on the exempt list, his team would have to pay him but he would be ineligible to play or practice for his new team. He could also remain on the list indefinitely.

The standard for placement on the exempt list is extremely low. Goodell merely needs to find that, pursuant to a league investigation, a player “may have”—not must have, only may have—engaged in any act that could be considered a crime of violence. Threatened violence, including an intemperately worded text or Instagram post that makes a physical threat, would count. There are also no procedural requirements related to a league investigation. Goodell essentially has total discretion.

Saints may have forced the NFL to act, and Brown and NFLPA could file grievances

The NFL might have assumed that they could punt on the Brown situation until the offseason. Although several teams have reportedly kicked the tires on Brown, none had brought him in for a workout. The fact that the 12-3 Patriots, whose wide receivers have struggled with inconsistency and injuries, weren’t interested in bringing Brown back for the playoffs seemed to signal that he would remain away from the NFL until next year.

The Saints and head coach Sean Payton—whom Goodell suspended for the entire 2012 season due to Payton’s alleged role in Bountygate—abruptly altered the timeline. If the Saints sign Brown and if Goodell then immediately places Brown on the exempt list or suspends him, it’s possible Brown and the NFLPA could file a grievance. Unfortunately for Brown and the NFLPA, such a grievance would go to Goodell or a designate of Goodell’s choosing.

Still, the NFLPA might welcome the prospect of contesting Goodell’s authority. Even if the rules permit Goodell to exempt or suspend Brown, forcing the NFL to explain the precise reasons for punishing Brown—and the timing for issuing that punishment—would put the league on the defensive.

As mentioned above, Brown could argue that the timing is unfair and that he has already been effectively suspended by the league. Multiple respected NFL journalists have written and reported that the league would exempt Brown if any team signs him. It’s obvious those journalists aren’t making up the same report—someone, presumably with ties to the NFL, is feeding it to them. Since no team wants to sign and pay a player only to have him immediately become unavailable, Brown can insist he’s been de facto suspended since the Patriots cut him in September.

Brown and the NFLPA could even explore the possibility of bringing a collusion grievance against the league. Under Article 17 of the CBA, collusion can occur when the league and at least one team conspire to deprive a player of the collectively bargained right to sign with a team. Collusion attracted significant attention when Colin Kaepernick and Eric Reid pursued collusion grievances against the NFL and succeed in procuring a multi-million-dollar settlement.

If the NFL has leaked to media information intended to dissuade teams from signing Brown, perhaps Brown and the NFLPA could show that the league has more directly discouraged teams from signing him. A collusion grievance would be heard by a neutral arbitrator, not Goodell. To prevail in a collusion grievance, Brown would need to prove a by a clear preponderance of the evidence that collusion occurred and that it caused him economic harm.

NFL could counter any grievances filed by Brown and NFLPA

Other than applying public pressure on the NFL, Brown and the NFLPA filing grievances would likely lead to failed outcomes. Goodell would have discretion to hear any conduct grievances. While a collusion grievance wouldn’t fall under Goodell’s authority, proof of collusion requires much more than conjecture or theory—it demands actual evidence.

Also, the NFL would be armed with a variety of counter arguments. The league could credibly maintain that it has followed all collectively bargained procedural requirements for conduct matters. Any unfairness suffered by Brown arguably stems from the NFLPA’s failure to negotiate safeguards for players who are accused of misconduct (Brown could talk to Brady about that).

Goodell also doesn’t have a need to place Brown on the exempt list until he signs with a team. The list is designed to separate a player accused of wrongdoing from his team while the league conducts an investigation. Since Brown isn’t on a team, placement of Brown on the exempt list arguably doesn’t make any sense. That would change if he signed with a team.

The league can further contend that Brown’s absence from the NFL isn’t the result of a vast conspiracy. It instead, the NFL would maintain, reflects each NFL team deeming Brown too much of a risk. He’s clearly a loose cannon on social media, he doesn’t always follow team rules and at times he doesn’t seem to respect authority. Teams generally don’t want players who cause distractions.

Lastly, the Saints may have just done the NFL—and its attorneys—a favor. If the NFL didn’t want teams to sign Brown, then the Saints didn’t get, or don’t care about, the message—or, more likely, there is no message. The team’s interest in signing Brown would undermine a collusion grievance since it shows the team is acting in pursuit of its own best interests and isn’t following any league edict.
