Australia's rh & lh opening obsession?

I keep hearing how Australia loves a rh and lh opening combo, a comment was just made about it being tried and true for us. Have we completely forgotten our prolific left hand combos of Hayden & Langer or Gilchrist and Hayden in odi's. When did this sudden obsession begin?
