It's something that has been mentioned and noticed that the County Championship game has been put back and not given as much important as it should in the ECB's drive for the shorter format of the game. You can see issues with players technical ability and the lack of players you can count on to be called up and make a difference. Players in this team are expected to go from ODi's straight to Test cricket without proper practice and games to get their eye in. Look at this years schedule;
County Championship 2 games in April followed by a months break for the ODI cup. The Bulk of the season is then played during May and early July, when England players are with the England team usually.
T20 comes into it for July to August although, for some reason this year they put 1 random week of County Championship in mid-August and put the final 3 games in September.
Why the breaks and constant stop start later in the year?
Of the current test team this is the number of County Games they've played this season alone;
Burns - 8
Denly - 6
Root - 2
Roy - 0
Stokes - 0
Bairstow - 0
Buttler - 0
Broad - 7
Archer - 0
Leach - 8
Overton - 8
I believe a better scenario would be to play the LOI first from April to mid-May and then follow up the with the County Championship until the end of July, then the t20 Blast in August and September. So it would look something like;
April to Mid-May: ODI Cup
Early-May to late July: 11 County Championship Games Late July to late August: T20 Blast September: Final 3 Championship Games.
This gives players chances to play County Games before the International period from June/July to September and then be available again in September for the end. Some players might miss the ODI cup due to the IPL but, not many. The County Championship would start early May during the ODI knockouts.
I'm interested in seeing what people think about the ECB schedule and how it can be changed for the better.
