Tim Paine sends warning signals to India, says we have 3 of world's best batsmen in our squad

The experience of 15,000 Test runs between Steve Smith and David Warner will certainly give Australian batting unit a formidable look when they take on India in a four-match series at the end of the year, feels skipper Tim Paine.

Under Paine, Australia for the first time in 71 years lost a home Test series against India 1-2 in the 2018-19 bilateral contest. However, Smith and Warner were then in the midst of their ball-tampering suspension and the team was in a transition phase.

"This is a different team, no doubt their team will be slightly different as well, but it's two high quality teams, a really anticipated series purely because of the quality of cricket, not for what's happened before. India and Australia as a rivalry, it's a series a bit like the Ashes that we all look forward to," Paine was quoted as saying by 'Cricbuzz'.

Not only the seasoned duo but the extremely talented Marnus Labuschagne also adds the necessary depth that the batting unit didn't have last time around.

"I think you put in 15,000 Test runs with two guys alone, Steve Smith and David Warner, Marnus Labuschagne's come on in leaps and bounds and he's now a top three or four batsman in the world himself.

"You put that amount of runs into a cricket side, last time we didn't have ... we know how good India's bowling line-up is and last time we just weren't quite good enough if we're totally honest against that attack, whereas this time I think we'll be a different kettle of fish. We've got three of the best batsmen in the world in our top six," the captain said.

Matthew Wade playing purely as a batsman also is an advantage, opinedd Paine, who will continue to keep wickets.

"Matthew Wade back firing adds a real toughness to it, Travis Head improved a lot since he played India last time. So I think it's going to be an exciting series, there's no doubt about it.

"The batting line-ups on show are going to be as good as you will see, it's going to be exciting for fans and it's going to be who handles (the pressure), we know the conditions over here are going to offer the quicks something and I think it's going to be awesome to watch, so I can't wait to play in it," he said.

New on SI: Chargers' Isaac Rochell on Los Angeles' D-Line: 'We're the Best in the Country'

Los Angeles defensive lineman Isaac Rochell credits teammate Joey Bosa as being the best passer rusher in the league.

Sheltering in place is a common theme for people around the world. The same goes for NFL players trying stay in shape and keep their sanity during a global pandemic. Sports Illustrated spoke with Chargers defensive lineman Isaac Rochell about what he’s doing to keep busy and stay in peak physical condition.

Rochell just finished his third year in the NFL and considers himself blessed to live in Southern California, a place he describes as “the nicest part of the country.” Living in California certainly has its benefits, especially when it comes to exercise. Rochell says he “can go across the street to the beach and do beach workouts … it’s almost a blessing in disguise because it’s forced us to get out on the beach and do some sand workouts we wouldn’t normally do.”

The 24-year-old lineman out of Notre Dame says the Chargers' defensive line is the best in the country. Rochell credits teammate Joey Bosa as being the best passer rusher in the league and added the team’s depth and versatility allows Chargers defensive coordinator Gus Bradley to get creative with that group’s usage.

As for his thoughts on former teammates like quarterback Philip Rivers and running back Melvin Gordon, both of which signed with other teams this offseason, Rochelle admitted “it’s weird ... it’s definitely going to be an adjustment.”

While Gordon stayed in the AFC West by signing with the Broncos, Rochell has his sights on playing against the Chiefs. Not only is Kansas City a division rival, but they are also the reigning Super Bowl champions, something Rochell acknowledges “is in the back of your mind ... I’ll definitely be circling that game and be excited to go back out against them.”

Rochell started the community initiative

See You On Sunday two years ago in an effort to promote social media health and “being mindful of the effects social media can have on mental health.” His mission is simple, “to take Saturdays off social media and be intentional with your day.”

Rochell admitted it’s hard to remove himself from social media, especially on Saturdays during Notre Dame games, but it’s been beneficial for his relations and “being more intent and spending time on the people I’m with and focusing on that time.”

The 6-foot-4, 280-pound lineman played in all 16 games the last two seasons and has seven sacks and 46 tackles in his career.

(Hypothetically) How much do you reckon Babar Azam would accumulate at an IPL auction?

Curious to hear people’s opinions. The highest ranked T20I batsmen in the world playing in sub continental conditions. At the ripe age of 25 with captaincy potential.

New on SI: Terrell Davis Discusses Donation to Feeding America, Coronavirus Isolation and Tiger King

Hall of Fame running back Terrell Davis talks about how he and his family are dealing with quarantine during the coronavirus pandemic, the latest NFL free agency news, and donating to Feeding America.

Hall of Fame running back turned NFL Network analyst and

CBD beverage entrepreneur, Terrell Davis, is typically very busy, especially during the NFL season. But now that he, like most of the country, is practicing self-isolation due to the coronavirus pandemic, Davis finds himself with a lot more free time, which he happily welcomes.

Davis, a father of three, told Sports Illustrated he is taking full advantage of the extra down time by spending it with his family.

"These are moments we otherwise wouldn't have gotten a chance to do." The former Broncos running back went on to say he is trying to "relish this moment because there is going to be a time when they get old and they move out and I won't have time to spend with them, so I'm trying to take advantage."

The two-time Super Bowl champion cited the importance of having a positive mindset to make the most out of a bad situation. He recently made a generous donation to Feeding America, which is the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization. Davis' CBD beverage company, DEFY, sent $400,000 worth of product which included 50,000 bottles, to food banks in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and Detroit.

The 1998 NFL MVP stressed the importance of giving back and trying to make a difference in a time of need. He said, "we want to encourage everyone out there to just give ... whatever you have, whether it's time, whether it's money, whether it's product because that's the only way we are going to get through this thing.

Davis also dived into NFL free agency and specifically discussed two superstar running backs, Todd Gurley and Melvin Gordon, both of which signed on with new teams in 2020. The former Broncos running back likes the landing spot in Denver for Gordon.

"Melvin brings a different style of running back, he's a bigger back, he's more of a power back, with some finesse and some wiggle in his body."

When asked about the direction of running back contracts in the league, Davis admitted he "hates to see it," specifically pointing out Titans running back Derrick Henry, who was franchised tagged this year. Davis says the landscape in the NFL and the way general managers and coaches approach running back contracts dictates the philosophy of not investing big money in rushers.

Davis capped off the interview by discussing the Netflix documentary "Tiger King." As for his thoughts on Joe Exotic and his crew of zoo-workers, he said: "anybody in that industry that is willing to go in a cage or to be around exotic animals like that, you just can't have it all there ... those people are just not all there."

What if T20 leagues awarded the winner like European football leagues?

Now that COVID-19 has decided to fuck my exams and cricket, I have a lot of time. So here is a futile post. Imaginary scenarios where the team that finishes first in group stages get awarded the trophy like in European football leagues

IPL

Season Group Stage Winners Playoff Winners
2008 Rajasthan Royals Rajasthan Royals
2009 Delhi Daredevils (Capitals) Deccan Chargers
2010 Mumbai Indians Chennai Super Kings
2011 Royal Challengers Bangalore Chennai Super Kings
2012 Delhi Daredevils (Capitals) Kolkata Knight Riders
2013 Chennai Super Kings Mumbai Indians
2014 KXI Punjab Kolkata Knight Riders
2015 Chennai Super Kings Mumbai Indians
2016 Gujarat Lions Sunrisers Hyderabad
2017 Mumbai Indians Mumbai Indians
2018 Sunrisers Hyderabad Chennai Super Kings
2019 Mumbai Indians Mumbai Indians

So lets put that into perspective:

Most successful teams in playoff system Number of titles Most successful teams in football-style system Number of titles
Mumbai 4 Mumbai 3
Chennai 3 Chennai 2
Kolkata Knight Riders 2 Delhi 2
Deccan Chargers 1 Sunrisers Hyderabad 1
Sunrisers Hyderabad 1 Gujarat Lions 1
Rajasthan Royals 1 KXI Punjab 1
- - RC Bangalore 1
- - Rajasthan Royals 1

Stupid Inferences:

-KKR would never have been champions under the football-style system.

-Delhi would be the joint second most successful team under the football style system

-RCB, KXIP, Gujarat Lions would all be one time IPL champions under the football style

Pakistan Super League

Season Group Stage Winners Play Off Winners
2016 Peshawar Zalmi Islamabad United
2017 Peshawar Zalmi Peshawar Zalmi
2018 Islamabad United Islamabad United
2019 Peshawar Zalmi Quetta Gladiators

Most successful teams in playoff system Number of titles Most successful teams in football-style system Number of titles
Islamabad United 2 Peshawar Zalmi 3
Peshawar Zalmi 1 Islamabad United 1
Quetta Gladiators 1 - -

Stupid Inferences:

-Peshawar would be the most successful team in PSL with three titles to their name under a football-style system.

Sydney Sixers 2 Adelaide Strikers 2
Sydney Thunder 1 Melbourne Stars 2
Brisbane Heat 1 Melbourne Renegades 1
Adelaide Strikers 1 Hobart Hurricanes 1
Melbourne Renegades 1 - -

Stupid Inferences:

-Hobart Hurricanes, who have never been BBL champions, would have won their first tile 2018-19 under the football-style system

-Sydney Thunder would never have been champions under a football style system.

-Strikers and Stars would be second joint successful teams under a football style system

Caribbean Premier League

Season Group Stage Winners Play Off Winners
2013 Guyana Amazon Warriors Jamaica Tallawahs

Most successful teams in play off system Number of titles Most successful teams in football style system Number of title
Trinbago Knight Riders 3 Guyana Amazon Warriors 3
Jamaica Tallawahs 2 Trinbago Knight Riders 2
Barbados Tridents 2 Barbados Tridents 2

Stupid inferences:

-Guyana Amazon Warriors, who are yet to win a CPL tournament, would be 3 times CPL champions under a football style system

-Fun fact: Guyana went undefeated (won 10/10) in the 2019 season. Their only match lost being the final

-Jamaica Tallawahs would have never been champions under a football style system

I have excluded the T20 Blast (has two divisions) and the Mzansi Super League (because no one gives a fuck).

What are some of your favourite moments from your time playing cricket?

We rarely talk about amateur cricket on this sub, so I thought I'd give it a go.

At some point we have all donned the whites and/or turned our arms over for a couple of overs and that got me thinking, what are some of your favourite moments from games that you have been involved in?

They could be something funny, something weird, your biggest fail/your biggest achievement, a character you played with, a particular park you played at or anything else cricket related.

For example, I remember a well known football commentator turning up at our training in his whites to help out. I also remember playing at a park that was at such a high angle that if you hit the ball to one side, it would run uncontrollably down the hill for four. There was also a time when whilst keeping wicket, I missed a ball and it hit me above the pad, making my thigh swell up like a second knee.

What are some of your favourite moments?

Paranoia at getting farted on by the WicketKeeper at my local game.

I first posted this 2 weeks back and was removed by the admins last time. Reposting since they have relaxed the sub rules.

I just wanted to have a fun game of cricket to take my mind of the current events going on around the world. Yes Coronavirus, I am talking about you. But I can't catch a break. First of all, I was relieved to find that that the bowler who was showing visible symptoms of cold yesterday was not playing today. Hope he gets the treatment he requires. In spite of people cancelling on us, we still put together a team to play 8 a side cricket.

Before the match, I talked to the opposing team about the Mankad incident yesterday where I took early starts to keep my distance from their sick bowler and they understood that I was not trying to take an unfair start nor did I stray outside the crease absentmindedly like the Pennyworth guy in IPL, I forget his name. I accepted that I was rightly out but my intentions were noble and for my health. The opposing team captain agreed that a sick guy should not be playing cricket anyway, especially in the current scenario.

We also agreed NOT to celebrate with each other within makeout range whenever our team gets a wicket and that we need to keep our distances. No high fives or fist bumps. We informed the Rahane of our team that handshake celebrations also are out of the equation now. We are going to celebrate wickets by clapping our own hands together or with the Namaste greeting and avoid all unnecessary contact with our teammates. Our team's Rabada was also instructed to not get in the face of the batsman while celebrating a dismissal.

We start the match and we are sent in to bowl first. I am standing at first slip which is my regular position. The Wicketkeeper, who is also our captain is standing at 2 arms length to me. We take 3 early wickets , I take a sharp catch and things are looking up for us when suddenly our Wicketkeeper captain lets out a thunderous fart. We start chuckling and he apologizes and says that his stomach is acting up. Contrary to popular belief this fart was accompanied by an unholy smell which lingered for 10 seconds. I was standing right next to him and I got the worst of it. My mind soon goes back to what I read about Coronavirus getting transmitted via farts. Farts can have droplet particles which has a highly unlikely but small chance of transmitting the virus. Wearing pants should prevent droplets from escaping but this bastard was wearing shorts and the fart was too powerful to not have droplets escaping the pants. I am shitting bricks now and all I am thinking of is whether I am going to catch the virus from a fart. Such a stupid way to catch the virus. I lose my concentration, drop a dolly of a catch, miss a runout. Also I get bowled for 2 runs, missing a straight ball when its my tun to bat. I can't catch a break. But apparently I can certainly catch a fart. FML

To everyone here, we are not be able to play cricket outdoors these days and it might be difficult or even impossible for your teammate to fart on you. So you all take care and beware of non cricket-related toxic farts.

The two are not mentioned often when talking about best cover-drivers of the ball. While players like VK, Ian Bell, Steve Smith, who all look labourous when cover-driving and are often not effective as the two above are often regarded highly.

Is it a personal prefernce thing, the cult status of the VK and Smith and the hive mind that comes with it, or both ?

P.S.: I am trying to mould my batting technique around the dynamics of VK at the crease, so me not liking the VK, Smith, or even Ian Bell is not an issue here.

What's your country's all time greatest XI that played together as a team?

So not a team of the best players ever. A team of players where every player is right up there amongst the greats or better players of the time. I'll have to go with one of the easiest choices with Australia. The funny thing is that I thought this team played together all the time but I think it may have only played a few times.
M. Hayden
J. Langer
R. Ponting
M. Waugh
S. Waugh
D. Martyn
A. Gilchrist
S. Warne
B. Lee
J. Gillespie
G. McGrath
Some good stats there. 174 centuries, 287 fifties. Average runs 1-7 = 8376. 1998 wickets. Ave wickets 8-11 = 460. I haven't worked out weighted averages for the team.
Anyway a fun exercise for lockdown.
