So when this Test was being played I went to bed at lunch (was in Australia) thinking England had it in the bag only 5 down with Stokes and Buttler at the crease needing only about 100 or so. The closeness of the final result came as a total shock and I wasn't even aware of how close it did get.
I watched The Test recently, finishing the final episode yesterday which covers the 3rd-5th Tests including this one. I had never even seen footage of the late stages of the innings so this was the first time for me. There were clearly a number of critical moments where Aus lost it. But was it one or two or all of them?
- Dropped catch in the outfield by Marcus Harris - difficult but not impossible catch. From what I'd heard about it he'd dropped a sitter. Not sure it was that easy. Tricky.
- Wasted review by Paine on the Cummins ball clearly outside leg stump. Last throw of the die must have been Paine's thought but it was a terrible call and they paid the price later.
- Lyon's missed run out. That throw could have been better and closer to the stumps, there was plenty of time going by how far the batsman was out. Still he should have taken it.
- The obvious (to TV viewers) LBW next ball when Aus had no more reviews. This hurt more than anything else as it looked out and looked a terrible call. Of course they could have reviewed it if Paine hadn't wasted that review. This one could be added to the pile of decisions that have gone against Australia in critical moments in the close ones which Aus never wins. (of course I would say that) The other issue was Paine not bringing the field in when Stokes was facing the last ball to stop him scoring a single and retaining the strike. They showed it happening once but did it happen multiple times? I think Leach didn't face that many balls. And when he did they bowled too short?
Anyway that's my thoughts. Interested to hear opinions on this. I know most non-Aussies here seem to dislike Australia and are happy for them to lose either way but with a neutral hat on it would be good to know your thoughts.
