Will the international format of the game always be the highest/most important?

I know a lot of you are football/soccer fans so bear with me for a second (I am too, in a filthy casual sort of way). I really dislike how for some hardcore fans the international country v country aspect of the game is often seen as a sideshow at best or a distraction at worst from the “main” format of the game which is club football. Some fans even go as far as to hope their club’s players aren’t selected to play for their country for fear that they might not be match fit for club football.

Now obviously I’m painting with a broad brush here and obviously the football world cup, the euro etc are very popular (I love em) but I don’t think most people would argue with me that club football is the main show.

One of the things I like about cricket is that, yes we certainly do have domestic cricket and it can be incredibly popular (and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, btw—I’m very sad to be missing out on the IPL and county cricket), but the international format of the game is far and away what fans care about the most. I think (I could be wrong) most Indian fans care about the India cricket team a lot more than their IPL team, and that’s generally speaking even more true for other countries.

With the increase in popularity of T20 leagues, do you see any possibility of cricket ending up more like football in this way, where domestic cricket ends up mattering to fans more than international cricket?
