Shoutout to the guy who predicted James Vince nicking off on 25 the other day
With Melbourne's 2nd wave of COVID cases still yet to peak, normality is still some time off, and even 5 months away I don't think they would have recovered enough to allow crowds.
Hence for me the obvious solution is to play at Optus Stadium in Perth. For a number of reasons, it narrowly missed out on a test in the first place to the Gabba, it's the 2nd largest cricket ground in the country (discounting ANZ) and AFL games are already at half capacity, we could be seeing full crowds by December.
What do you guys think about this? I suspect India may object to playing at both Perth and Brisbane in the same series, the MCG wicket is definitely favourable to them.
Will the counties be streaming on their website/YouTube channel? If so, what’s the best match to watch tomorrow?

Pure cricketing bliss: watch through all of the videos, and listen to the greatest voice in cricket history discuss all of the legends he'd played with, played against, watched, and heard about from their peers, and the reasons for his choices for the final XI.
You might disagree with his selection, but Benaud - an all-time great bowler and captain, a commentator in both hemispheres for almost half a century, and immensely knowledgeable about players in every era of the game - is almost certainly the most qualified person in cricket history to make a list like this.
What do y'all think will happen in the Willis Trophy starting tomorrow? My prediction is that there will be a drawn final between Essex and Lancashire. Nottinghamshire will finish bottom of their division.
Shoot away, I’ll try and answer ‘em all once I wake up.
have at it
I was bored this morning so I decided to come up with hypothetical test, odi and t20 squads for nz if there were no shared players amongst the teams. I’ve seen some other countries on here before but not NZ, (apologies if it has been done already).
I tried to place players in their best formats where possible, and also included some back up players for each squad for a possible touring team situation.
Here’s what I came up with:
Test:
Latham Blundell Williamson - captain Young Nicholls Watling - keeper Degrandhomme Jamieson Southee Somerville/A.Patel Wagner
Back up batsman - Henry Cooper Back up seam bowler - Ben Sears Back up spin bowler - Somerville/Patel
This is a very similar team to NZs usual test team, with just Boult and Taylor not there who are usual mainstays. I’ve put Young in Taylor’s place as he was the next cab off the rank last time we needed a new test batsman and looks the goods. Jamieson has done well in both odis and tests in his brief career but I think he offers the most value here.
Spinner is debateable depending on what you are looking for, in the sub continent both would play.
The back ups - I haven’t seen much of Cooper batting but his record is good and he seems like he can score tons which is always nice. Sears looks quick and has done well in a very short career so far. Picked on potential really.
Odis:
Guptill R.Ravindra Conway - keeper Taylor - captain Chapman Neesham D.Mitchell Santner Henry Ferguson Boult
Back up batsman - George Worker Back up seam bowler - Jacob Duffy Back up spinner - Todd Astle
Again a pretty solid team, with only the top order batting being strongly different from NZs usual team. I went with Ravindra over Worker mainly on potential as I think he looks set for international honours eventually based on what I’ve seen of him. Could definitely understand picking worker in the main XI for now though.
Conway slots in here as keeper with Taylor captaining in his best format. Chapman may be controversial as he’s done poorly for NZ in the odis he has played but I really think there’s a class player there. Otherwise it’s just Mitchell in for degrandhomme from the World Cup bowling unit as a sort of like for like replacement. Boults best format is odis in my opinion which is why he plays here rather than tests (opposite with Southee).
Jacob Duffy looks a very solid one day bowler from what I’ve seen, and Todd Astle slots in here as back up (would have probably been my starting test spinner if he hadn’t quit first class cricket but alas...). He’d play alongside Santner on a spinning track ideally.
T20is:
G.Phillips Seifert - keeper Munro - captain N.Kelly T.Bruce D.Foxcroft D.Bracewell M.Rippon Sodhi S.Rance H.Bennett
Back up batsman - Hamish Rutherford Back up seam bowlers - Tickner/Kuggeleijn Back up spinner - Ronnie Hira
Harder to pick this team as so many proven players out of contention. I think the top three is pretty solid. Phillips hasn’t done much for NZ in t20s so far but his record in the CPL over three seasons suggests he’s much better than what he’s shown so far. Kelly and Foxcroft are sort of left field suggestions as there’s not too many stand out proven middle order players to choose from. Both of these two show a lot of promise and performed well for Otago in the past season though which is why I went with them. Bruce I think is someone that could potentially be the middle over t20 player Nz needs (hasn’t quite shown it yet internationally though).
I’d be interested to see how Rippon goes as he looks a great prospect in all formats. I know Rance didn’t have a great last season but I think he’s quite handy in t20s and has been for lots of seasons for CD.
I put bracewell over kuggels as kuggels bowling has been smashed recently internationally. Tickner also not a bad shout but I think Bennett does a similar job slightly better. Hira’s a blast from the past but didn’t do too badly last season.
Another way to structure this team could be to have Rutherford open and drop seifert down to number 5/6 in place of Kelly/foxcroft as well.
I’ve put Munro as captain because I want to see him angrily gesticulate for 20 overs at all the fielders/umpires/batsman/spectators (and he’s a class t20 bat with heaps of experience).
Not selected due to injury/form/etc
Corey Anderson - would slot into the t20 team in the middle order if fit and firing, but he has seemed short of a gallop in recent outings. Adam Milne - not sighted for a while due to injury but if fit and playing well would also slot into the t20 team. Mitchell mcclenaghen - more of an overseas pro now, would probably make this t20 team also if committed to NZ.
So overall some pretty decent sides (particularly test and odis, with the t20 team at least being fun to watch). Obviously NZ would never need to do this as they only play about 4 games a year, but still fun to think about nonetheless.
What do you guys think? Anyone I’ve missed?
David Willey and Sam Billings returned to the International arena and had an excellent Thursday evening in Southampton that brought up the victory for the England side in the series starter. Now, both Ireland and England are up against each other for the 2nd ODI in a gap of just one day, at the same venue.
From the Irish point of view, there wasn’t any watch-out performance other than debut Curtis Campher’s maiden fifty. They had an excellent 1st half with the ball, where they reduced England 78/4 at one point, but missed a trick to stop the English middle-order.
Let’s focus on the team news for the second ODI, the fantasy tips and dream11 prediction for the game.
The 2nd ODI between ENgland and Ireland begins at 6:30 PM IST on 1st August, 2020 (Saturday).
The same venue where the 1st ODI took place: The Rose Bowl, Southampton.
The game will be telecasted in Sony Six channel and stream online on SonyLiv
Yes, the game's points will be added to the teams' League table. Read more on ICC World Cup Super League.
The home side are expected to play the same XI unless the management wants to play Joe Denly in place of James Vince. Vince, in his short innings, was impressive though making his replacement a tough call. On the bowling, the bowlers have built a strong point restraining the young Irish side within 200. The four will likely continue to wrap up the series before it gets to a decider.
Roy, Bairstow (WK), Vince, Banton, Billings, Morgan (C), Ali, Curran, Rashid, WIlley, Saqib
A likely change would be Boyd Rankin or Josh Little replacing the injured Barry McCarthy. Otherwise, this team deserved to fancy another chance in the middle. The young players looked promising at many moments in the Series opener before they let it go. It is the experienced campaigners like Paul Stirling and the skipper Andrew Balbirnie who will have to take control.
P Stirling, G Delany, A Balbirnie (C), H Tector, K O’Brien, L Tucker (WK), C Campher, S Singh, A McBrine, C Young, B Rankin
If they decide to play on the same pitch they used in the first game, one could expect to wear down and, therefore, slow down a little. But the compact game time on Thursday might help the curator bring it back in the full piece. So, not banking on that, go with the same attack keeping the first ODI in mind. The Toss will play a significant role as if England bat first, go long for more English batsmen, and settle with English bowlers and All-rounders if they bowl first.
Billings was in good touch on Thursday, making it a compelling call to pick both WK options from the English side.
Both Roy and Morgan are unmissable. The real challenge is when you pick one from the middle-order: Vince vs Banton. I would bet on Vince as he played at one-drop and was looking unstoppable. From the Irish side, I expect Stirling to come good, with both Delany and Tector looking to be other good picks. Pick one Irish batter as their All-rounders and bowlers guarantee better returns.
Campher was the Irish player of the first game, making him a mandate pick. Moeen Ali had very little to do in the 1st game but looked promising in the short bowling spell he had to bowl. I would like to continue with him here. Other option to look out for is Gareth Delany.
This is again a tricky spot, with more performers from the previous game are within this section. I am going with four bowlers: Willey, Rashid, McBrine, and Saqib.
Saqib Mahmood bowled brilliantly but with less luck. I expect him to come big this time. Rashid could be a game-changer considering the pitch might get slower than what was expected.

If the ball is outside off, everyone(except James Vince) can leave it alone, if it’s down leg, everyone has a little throw of the bat at it.
Is it a percentages thing? The chance of getting just enough on it to take it past the keeper for 4 outweighs that of getting a little tickle too the keeper?
The amount people who get out tickling down leg you’d think someone at this point would’ve thought ‘I’m just gonna let that one go’ but they don’t..
Sachin and Kohli debate got rikindled amongs a few cricket followers in my social circle. Who is better ? Who contributed more. So I thought to do some analysis and find out who was better. Hypothesis 1: Kohli will never break Sachin's records and at the same age/matches was not as good as Sachin Breaking all records will be tough - Sachin started very young and had age at his side. At the same age Sachin was way ahead in terms of no of matches at the same age. Both in Tests and ODIs.
Hypothesis 2: When comparing Sachin and Kohli - top players from two different eras - One argument is bowlers were better in Sachin era and wickets are flatter in kohli era and hance Sachin was better. I decided to compare team and batting performances during the matches both Kohli and Sachin played and find out if that was truly the case. If we take in the flat wicket and bad bowler factor into account during Sachin and Kohli eras:
Now, If we apply this factor - We can clearly see that Kohli leads Sachin in batting averages in both tests and in ODIs. Hypothesis 3: Kohli does not perfrom in World Cups. Applying the same math as above I agree the only major blot (if you can call it so) on Kohli's career has been World Cups - Sachin was definitely better here and by a good margin - Although world cups are very crucial but overall just 10% of their career. Hypothesis 4: Kohli has performed better under captaincy As a captain
We have already shown above that batting in ODIs was easier for Kohli while for Tests it was easier for Sachin. I wont go in applying those factors in as it will only make things worse for Sachin and Kohli is the undisputed winner here. Conclusion: The data will always be biased and can not be 100% representation of true class . Unless both batsmen are born in the same era and played at same positions, with similar teams, against similar oppositions. We would never get that definitely. But based on the data we have and trying to take some of those assumptions out of the picture:
My Pick : Kohli but hope he improves his world cup record. [link] [comments] |
I feel south Africa had very high hopes from aiden markram , specially during the rebuilding phase. While guys like rabada and qdk have gone upwards poor aiden has been an underachiever. Hope he comes good for the promise shown and the backing he gets in coming years.

Ever since the official announcement of ICC CWC Super League, there are been numerous queries popping up on everyone’s head about the tournament.
Getting straight into the topic, Super League is the major qualification tournament for the 2023 Cricket World Cup among 12 full-member nations and Netherlands (ICC WCLC Winners).
It was first proposed in 2017 to give some sort of validation to the regular meaningless bilateral series. Hence, the Super League was announced as the crossover between the regular FTP series and the World Cup qualification pathway.
Previously, ICC used to run the World Cricket League cycle among the associates to promote and relegate teams in different divisions. After surpassing the Division 2, teams would qualify for the World Cup Qualifier and contest for a spot in the World Cup.
In order to introduce the Super League, the aforementioned World Cricket League cycle has been scrapped by the ICC. In addition, ICC announced two more tiers under the Super League for the Associates to contest and have tiny shot at eyeing a World Cup spot. ICC CWC League 2 and CWC Challenge League are those two tiers.
The whole cycle consists of top 32 teams in One Day cricket (12 full members + the associates finishing 13-32 in the WCL). Of them, 20 teams have the ODI status. Teams ranked 1-13 are placed in the Super League, 14-20 in League 2, and non-ODI teams (20-32) are placed in the Challenge League. All the matches contested in the Super League and League 2 have ODI status whereas Challenge League matches are only given List A relegation by the ICC.
On completion of a match, the points will be distributed in the following structure:
A total of 156 ODIs will be played during the course of the course of two years. And after the completion of the league, the top 7 teams other than India will qualify directly for the 2023 World Cup, while the rest of the teams will have to play in the 2022 Cricket World Cup Qualifier. India, being the host country, has gained direct qualification into the World Cup.
The top 12 teams in the Super League will defend their place in the league for the next round, while the 13th place team will have to compete bilaterally with the winner of League 2 for a place in the next cycle of the Super League. The winning team is promoted to the next round of the Super League and the losing team will play League 2.
For example, if a full member finishes 13th in the Super League and Scotland wins the League 2, those two teams will square off in a bilateral series with the winner getting a spot in the next cycle of the Super League. Continuing the example, if Scotland win that bilateral series, they’ll play the Super League whereas the full member will have to play the League 2 in the next cycle.
The Super League was scheduled to start on 1 May 2020. However, the global pandemic has forced some series to be postponed. Hence, the England vs Ireland ODI series, that’ll get underway from July 30, will serve as the first series to be a part of the Super League.
As the first series of the Super League fast-approaches, Geoff Allardice (ICC General Manager – Cricket Operations) said, ” We are delighted to get the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League underway with World Cup winners England against Ireland.”
“The league will bring relevance and context to ODI cricket over the next three years, as qualification for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 is at stake. The Super League gives cricket fans around the world even more reasons to watch as the drama of league cricket unfolds.”, he further added

Today I was reminded of a story my old man used to tell. Where he was given out caught behind off the bowling of the wicket keeper’s son by the wicket keeper’s father. Despite the fact that he “didn’t get anywhere near it”
I’ve also just seen that Ghulam Ali was once out c. Adam Lillee b. dennis Lillee. Seems possible that a batsman has been out to his brothers in a similar fashion.
Welcome ODI Super League, and welcome back ODI cricket. All three ODIs of this England vs Ireland series are set to inaugurate ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League, which will fetch teams for the ICC World Cup in 2023. We will soon release a detailed blog on the ODI league, which will be part of our Cricket Guides series.
Coming back to the ODI series, this will be the first time the World champions England will be playing a home ODI match, since their World Cup final win against New Zealand more than a year ago. No spectators will be allowed in this game despite a limited few were allowed in the Irish practice games.
Ireland, on the other side, playing their 1st ODI since January this year, are always a side to surprise. With the Irish management backing more youngsters this time, it would be an interesting watch to see how the new young Irish side is about to perform.
Venue: The Rose Bowl, Southampton, England
Date and Time: Jul 30, 2020, 6.30 PM IST
Expected Weather: Clear Sky, 49% Humidity, 22.13℃
Where to watch? : Sony Six, Sony Six HD, SonyLIV (Streaming)
The English management has decided to rest 5 of their regular ODI members for this short series, namely: Jofra Archer, Jos Buttler, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, and Chris Woakes. Still, the present core looks dense enough with Captain Eoin Morgan, the newly appointed vice-captain Moeen Ali, and the opening pair Jonny Bairstow and Jason Roy.
In the bowling department, the all-rounder Tom Curran, Adil Rashid, David Willey, and Saqib Mahmood are expected to feature in the playing XI. The in-form youngsters–Sam Billings and Tom Banton will form the middle-order along with the captain and his vice.
Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow, James Vince, Eoin Morgan, Tom Banton, Sam Billings, Moeen Ali, Tom Curran, Adil Rashid, David Willey, Saqib Mahmood
The visiting side has 22 members in total as a reserve, and the management has picked 14 out of them for the 1st ODI. The team has announced that they will choose 14 before every game on a match-by-match basis from the available 22. The 14 for the 1st game is announced, and you can see the list here.
I have picked four players out of this line-up to fancy in my fantasy side after going through the two practice games the team played. We will see that in the below section. Now here’s my Ireland playing XI prediction.
Paul Stirling, Gareth Delany, Andrew Balbirnie, William Porterfield, Harry Tector, Kevin O’Brien, Lorcan Tucker, Simi Singh, Curtis Campher, Andy McBrine, Joshua Little/Craig Young.
It’s a straightforward pick with Jonny Bairstow among the picks, and one can’t miss him in a pitch like The Rose Bowl.
3 of the top 4 English batsmen are in my fantasy XI, as I don’t want to risk going against anyone of these: Roy, Morgan, and Banton.
James Vince scored a quick 66 in the practice game against Ireland, and you can use him in place of Banton, as he is also batting at No.3.
From Ireland, I have picked two batsmen: Kevin O’Brien and Harry Tector. Both these middle-order batsmen have performed consistently well in the practice games, and Kevin’s all-round efforts can help with some extra points.
My Ireland pick for the Allrounder section is Simi Singh. The Indian-born Irish cricketer has fared well in the practice games with both ball and bat, and I expect him to play a big part in the Irish side this Thursday.
It is Moeen Ali from England I bank on among the other Allrounders present. The left-handed batsmen have a lot to contribute, with the lower middle-order batsmen will get more batting time as it is a 50-Overs per side match. His ability to play both the anchor and slogger role in the middle and final overs can help. We can also expect him to bowl the full 10-Overs as an experienced spinner pairing with Adil Rashid.
Considering the batting-friendly nature of Southampton’s ODI pitches, I am just going with 3 bowlers, with my two all-rounders already being the frontline bowlers. Also, there is Kevin from the batting unit who will bowl his part.
My picks: McBrine form Ireland, and Rashid and Willey from the England side. Saqib too, could be a good pick. His lower credit can help you fill spots.
Suggestion: You can also place James Vince in place of Tom Banton, with this combination of players.
