The Sachin and Kohli debate

The Sachin and Kohli debate

Sachin and Kohli debate got rikindled amongs a few cricket followers in my social circle. Who is better ? Who contributed more. So I thought to do some analysis and find out who was better.

Hypothesis 1: Kohli will never break Sachin's records and at the same age/matches was not as good as Sachin

Breaking all records will be tough - Sachin started very young and had age at his side. At the same age Sachin was way ahead in terms of no of matches at the same age. Both in Tests and ODIs.

  • What is interesting is at the same age level - Kohli has almost same no of hundreds. So that record definitely looks to be a risk.
  • If we look at tests performance they are pretty much even in terms of head to head at same no of matches/innings level.
  • ODIs is where Kohli outshines head to head at same no of matches/innings level.
  • Sachin played a lot of good innings but did not convert them into 100s at the same rate as Kohli

Hypothesis 2: When comparing Sachin and Kohli - top players from two different eras - One argument is bowlers were better in Sachin era and wickets are flatter in kohli era and hance Sachin was better.

I decided to compare team and batting performances during the matches both Kohli and Sachin played and find out if that was truly the case.

If we take in the flat wicket and bad bowler factor into account during Sachin and Kohli eras:

  • Overall runs scored by top 5 batsman and total team are actually lower for tests that Kohli played compared to Sachin. So batting in tests has become difficult by ~8-10%
  • Overall runs scored by top 5 batsman and total team are actually higher for ODIs that Kohli played compared to Sachin. So batting in ODIs has become easier by ~9%
  • Essentially, batting has become easier in ODIs and difficult in tests by a factor of ~8-10%.

Now, If we apply this factor - We can clearly see that Kohli leads Sachin in batting averages in both tests and in ODIs.

Hypothesis 3: Kohli does not perfrom in World Cups.

Applying the same math as above I agree the only major blot (if you can call it so) on Kohli's career has been World Cups - Sachin was definitely better here and by a good margin - Although world cups are very crucial but overall just 10% of their career.

Hypothesis 4: Kohli has performed better under captaincy

As a captain

  • Sachin scored 2454 ODI runs in 73 matches at an average of 37.75
  • Kohli scored 5147 ODI runs in 89 matches at an average of 74.59
  • Sachin scored 2054 Test runs in 43 innings at an average of 51.35
  • Kohli scored 5142 Test runs in 90 innings at an average of 61.21

We have already shown above that batting in ODIs was easier for Kohli while for Tests it was easier for Sachin. I wont go in applying those factors in as it will only make things worse for Sachin and Kohli is the undisputed winner here.

Conclusion: The data will always be biased and can not be 100% representation of true class . Unless both batsmen are born in the same era and played at same positions, with similar teams, against similar oppositions. We would never get that definitely.

But based on the data we have and trying to take some of those assumptions out of the picture:

  • Kohli definitely leads the race in ODIs
  • Tests is a close call with Kohli leading overall
  • Kohli as a captain has performed much better than Sachin
  • In terms of longevity Sachin and his records will be difficult to beat
  • Kohli will have a shorter career than Sachin for sure but on account of better 50 to 100 conversion rate can definitely beat Sachin's 100 100s.
  • World Cups is where Sachin really outsmarts Kohli - no doubt about that

My Pick : Kohli but hope he improves his world cup record.
