64 years ago, Jim Laker left a test ground after a satisfying win to go back to London to play for Surrey the very next day.
On his way back, he stopped in a pub in Lichfield for a pint and a sandwich and watched the test highlights there. Nobody recognized him and he paid and left. When he reached home his wife Lilli, who was Austrian, asked him if he had done something good today as there had been a lot of phone calls and telegrams.
Laker's 19 wicket match haul could stand for a very long time. Nobody's been close for a while!
