I’m a big fan of Woakes. Watching the test today, you see why his figures in England are so impressive. After Broad and Anderson has multiple spells with the new ball, he’s asked to come in and get some set Batsmen out. Later on, he bowls with a 70 over old ball, then comes out of the attack so Broad and Anderson can have a go with the new ball
At the end of the innings, Woakes has one wicket, but just looking at the figures doesn’t tell the story of being a first / second change bowler. It's so much harder to average 20 because you never bowl with the new ball, and when there’s an opening, you often come off for the 1st/ 2nd choice.
With that in mind I decided to look up who are the best “1st / 2nd change” bowlers in history - using stats guru on cricinfo, selecting bowlers stats for when they bowl as first or second change the results follow: (Minimum of 100 wickets, no spinners, 1970 onwards
Joel Garner 132 wickets @ 21.69
Malcolm Marshall 113 wickets @23.8
Ian Botham 177 wickets @ 25.84
Courtney Walsh 192 wickets @ 26.51
Neil Wagner 199 wickets @ 26.59
Morne Morkel 153 wickets @ 29.58
Steven Finn 107 wickets @ 30.07
Honourable mentions
Jacques Kallis 270 wickets @ 32.95
Ben Stokes 136 wickets @ 32.2
