After the Ben Stokes classic that kept the ashes alive, I was wondering what was the best test innings I've seen live on tv against my team.
Stokes might come in the top 5, but for me, number one would be VVS Laxman 281, Kolkata, 2001. And that'll be extremely tough to displace.
Laxman and Dravid I think batted out entire day 4. It was just unbelievable grit and batting. I still reckon we might have drawn that test and not lost it if not for some extremely shitty umpiring day 5, but yeah best test innings I've seen live on the telly vs us and prolly of all time
Would be interesting to see what other fans pick? If we think back to SA last year, ABD at Port Elizabeth was another level, Kohli in Adelaide, Gilly at Hobart or Steve Smith in Pune? Though I'll put Lara at no 2 after Laxman.

Sad that he sort of underachoeved individually in the ashes, despite winning it 4 times. I'll never forget those opening spells in Adelaide and Melbourne in 10/11.

Are there any subs devoted to guys posting questions about their batting and bowling techniques and how to correct them/ improve?
I have just got back into pace bowling last year and my technique is horrible compared to what it used to be, oops.
Hi everyone, I’ve started to get into cricket in the last year or so and downloaded the Ashes Cricket game, 2017 I think? To help out.
Anyway, I can usually bat pretty well but bowling is dicey at best, especially in career mode. I can put up half centuries or even a full century here and there batting but man bowling is hard. I’ve taken like, maybe 3 wickets in hours of play, one caught behind, one on appeal LBW, only really bowled one. Anyone have any tips? I know adjust length and delivery, but I do that and still get next to nothing. I’ll bowl maidens or low run totals but just can’t get outs- is it just cuz I’m early in the career mode or are there certain tricks to the game? Thanks

I was skeptical at first but some really interesting points are raised in the article and I think he is an oft-forgotten candidate. Read the article before you take out your pitchforks, no one is saying he should take over any time soon, and given he might well be dropped soon its probably weird timing for the article. However if Paine doesn't last much longer than our home summer, then form permitting, he could be a good short/middle term candidate until a more obvious choice emerges. Who knows the captaincy might help improve the consistency in his batting?
The two most obvious candidates for whenever Paine retires is Head and Smith, but depending on the timing of Paine's departure Head may still be too inexperienced. As for Smith, we know about his failings as a leader, and there is merit to letting him just focus on scoring bulk runs.

I'm so sorry if this is against the rules! I have been setting aside a bit of money to buy my boyfriend a cricket bat for Xmas this year.
I'd love to surprise him with a nice quality bat with his name engraved on it but I honestly don't know where to start. I've done a bit of research but would love to get an opinion on what to get as I'm a little bit clueless when it comes to the game.
Budgets not really an issue, I just want to make sure that I'm getting good value for money and a bat that can last him. He plays cricket recreationally and his current bat is too short for him (he's 6"4).
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!!

Young American guy here with an Indian uncle who constantly raves about the game but just can’t explain it well for the life of him. I'm an American with absolutely no background in cricket, but it seems like something truly amazing just happened in the Ashes. I've read articles about it, but I still don't really understand - what did Stokes and Leach do, and what makes it so incredible??

Ajinkya Rahane [MoM]: "Feels special. Getting this hundred after 29 or 30 innings. The first innings was crucial after 20 for 3. We needed a partnership, and the partnership between Rahul and me was crucial. Bowlers delivered well after that, but this hundred was special in the second innings. My time with Hampshire really helped me. I dedicate this hundred to the people who backed me, supported me when I was going through a rough patch. I've been getting 70s, but getting a 100 means a lot to me. I think first day the wicket was damp. West Indies bowled really well in that session. But it was important to play as many balls as possible without thinking about runs. We wanted to bat 90-100 overs in the first innings knowing runs would come. In the 2nd innings, me and Virat wanted to get a good partnership. We wanted to just bat, bat and bat."
Jason Holder: "Bowlers did a good effort, but we didn't bat well. Batting issues to sort, going on for too long. Top order not doing well, leaving much for the middle order to do. Wicket was a good wicket, we should've batted better. Ajinkya batted really well, everyone batted around him. It was a difficult wicket to blast players out. I wouldn't question the team selection. We played the same combination in the last series and we did very well. I think we've got to blame our batting performance. We could've put up a much better performance. In hindsight you can say a lot of things, but we players need to take more responsibility. Bumrah bowled really well, one of those spells that will dislodge most top-order players. That said, we need to be a lot better as a batting unit. For Jamaica, it's a place we have found success and our players have done well. Hopefully we can do that."
Virat Kohli: "Jinx excellent in both innings, KL solid in both innings too. Mention to Vihari too. We had to come back in this game 3-4 times, so that is a positive. Moving forward from Australia. Bumrah's workload is most important which is why he didn't play any white-ball games after the World Cup. He'll be a key factor for us as long as the World Test Championship continues. Shami is the same and Ishant is a banker, reliable always. Umesh is there too and Navdeep is waiting in the wings. We are settled as our bowling options, but managing workloads will be important. Vihari got a nod because combination is important. He's an effective part-time bowler and helps us when we need to catch up with the over-rate. We have a group discussion and then we decide what's best for the team. There will always be opinions about the XI, but people will know that it's in the interest of the team. It's a blessing that I'm in a position where I can contribute to the team in more than one way, but nothing is possible without your team. I don't think the credit can be taken away from the team at all. I am taking decisions, yes, but execution is done by others who raise their hand. We enjoy everyone's company, and that's the reason for our success. Jamaica is another opportunity to do a professional performance. We know WI will come hard at us, and we will try to plug the gaps from this Test."
