I was skeptical at first but some really interesting points are raised in the article and I think he is an oft-forgotten candidate. Read the article before you take out your pitchforks, no one is saying he should take over any time soon, and given he might well be dropped soon its probably weird timing for the article. However if Paine doesn't last much longer than our home summer, then form permitting, he could be a good short/middle term candidate until a more obvious choice emerges. Who knows the captaincy might help improve the consistency in his batting?
The two most obvious candidates for whenever Paine retires is Head and Smith, but depending on the timing of Paine's departure Head may still be too inexperienced. As for Smith, we know about his failings as a leader, and there is merit to letting him just focus on scoring bulk runs.
