Interesting ways the ICC Rankings could change in the next few months

This is for tests only

Case A: England win all tests from now until the end of the Pakistan series

They’d climb to 110 points, but they’d be tied (lol) with New Zealand, who, for the first time, come up the winners of the tie breaker (by decimal places) BY THE BAREST OF MARGINS, as one heartbroken commentator might say

Test Rankings in this Case

  1. India: 116

  2. New Zealand: 110

3 (+1). England: 110

4 (-1): Australia: 108

  1. South Africa: 98

Case B: England lose all Tests from now until the end of the Pakistan series

There would be media outrage to losing to SL, WI and PAK consecutively, and Jonny Bairstow would return as captain. Less importantly, England would slip far in the rankings.

  1. India: 116

  2. New Zealand: 110

  3. Australia: 108

4 (+1): South Africa: 98

5 (+1): Sri Lanka: 95

6 (-2): England: 92

Case C: The realistic one

Well Jonny Bairstow would still return to the test side, but my prediction for series results is:

ENG win 2-0 vs SL

ENG win 3-0 vs WI

ENG draw 1-1 vs PAK (Pakistan always turn up in England)

So, using these predictions, the rankings table in this case by 25 Aug 2020 should be:

  1. India: 116

  2. New Zealand: 110

  3. Australia: 108

  4. England: 107

  5. South Africa: 98

  6. Sri Lanka: 89

  7. Pakistan: 87

  8. West Indies: 78

  9. Bangladesh: 61

  10. Afghanistan: 49

  11. Zimbabwe: 17

  12. Ireland: 0
