Why is it hard to get 400+ wickets in Test Cricket? Only 15 bowlers in the history of test cricket have achieved this feat.

Several reasons for why only 15 bowlers have taken 400+ test wickets

  • If you look at the numbers, only Dale Steyn and Richard Hadlee have played less than 100 tests and have taken more than 400 wickets. To put a rough estimate, a bowler hence would have to play approx 100 test matches, roughly corresponding to 4 wickets a game
  • Taking 4 wickets a game would mean that a bowler would take 2 wickets per innings. It is only recently that many tests matches are concluding in results. In the decades gone by tests were drawn and were inconclusive. Meaning either an inning would not be played at all or total wickets falling would be just 10–12 in total. Bowler’s share (assuming there are 4 bowlers playing) in these 10–12 wickets will have to be 25 to 33% . Not impossible but, something that does not happen on a regular frequent basis. Washouts and other scenarios excluded.
  • Even if all 20 wickets were to fall, consistently taking 4 wickets, equaling 20% of all wickets is no mean feat.
  • Now to play 100 test matches, a player has to play on an average at least for 12 years, considering there would be on an average 8–9 tests matches played by his team. Playing for 12 years in test cricket in itself is no mean feat. So many players just end up playing 20–25 games and lose their way.
  • Now even if a player is able to play for 12 odd years, bowler will have to ensure fitness and safety. Most fast bowlers have had injury issues. One of the primary reasons you would see why many bowlers are not made captains
  • Shane Warne, Muttaih Muralitharan and Anil Kumble are worlds’s top three wicket takers. Reason why they have been able to do this is because they were all spinners and had lesser of a problem with injuries (compared to fast bowlers). Many also mention that Kumble and Murali had advantage of spin friendly pitches in sub continent.
  • Also, a lot would depend on how good your bowling partners are. If your bowling partner is leaking runs, even if the bowler is bowling very well, batsman would play him out, since they are getting runs on the other end.

So taking 400 wickets, is as huge a task like scoring 10000+ runs in test cricket. Not an easy task.

However, with so many tests yielding results, expect this number to rise in the near future.
