Bat recommendations

Hello all! Not sure if this is quite the right spot for this but here goes:

I've recently discovered the wonderful game of cricket (thanks to my South African girlfriend, I am an American) and I'm looking to get into playing it. There's a cricket league around me so I'm hoping I can get involved.

I'm looking for a bat. Having been used to the price of baseball bats (~50-75 dollars usually, the most expensive bat I own was ~105) I was a little shocked by the price of top of the line cricket bats! So I've decided to try to bargain hunt a little bit while not sacrificing quality too much.

Has anyone here used an Adidas XT Black (or White) 5.0 before? They're about in my price range and I saw a review that was fairly complimentary but it was by a shop that stocked them (conflict of interest imho) so I wanted to know if anyone had an unbiased opinion on them!

In the alternative if anyone has a recommendation for a bat under about 125 or 150 USD I would really appreciate it!

Thanks!

Have an Idea for the future of t20 cricket leagues, let me know what you think

There could be three main leagues throughout the world, every player in would be avaliavle for each competition, making it more exciting •Atlantic league(west indies, England) •Subcontinent league 2 divisions(pakistan*, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, UAE) • big bash(Australia, New Zealand, South Africa)

ATLANTIC •2 conferences • Uk confrence( Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham, Nottingham, Cardiff, London x2, Southhampton •west indies( Jamaica, st kitts, st Lucia, Florida, Trinidad, Barbados, Guyana, Brampton(Canada))

SUBCONTINENT example, Pakistan teams may not join due to tension with india •div 1(Kolkata, Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Punjab, Hyderabad, Karachi, gurjarat, Dhaka, Lahore, Colombo, Nagpur) Div 2( kunpur, cuttack, Pune, rajkot, dhamshala, Assam, dehrudun, Dubai, Abu Dhabi)

Big Bash League •3 divisions •confrence 1( Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane, Melbournex2) •conference 2, (Auckland, Wellington, sydneyx2, Hobart) •conference 3, (Cape Town, Johannesburg, port Elizabeth, Durban, centurion)

T20 series would be less of a thing, replaced by occasional friendlys Atlantic and big bash1-2 months, 2-3 months for indian T20 World Cup will still be a thing, Let me know what you think

Edit: sorry If I forgot any potential teams

Examples of strategies/tactics for an American trying to learn the game?

Hey! I just recently started to really grasp the game of Cricket. As an American, I've never really got it, but started watching more games and recently picked up Cricket 19 on PS4 in an attempt to understand it past the pure basics of the game. Is there any good videos on YouTube or otherwise that show the strategies and tactics, or could you guys explain some strats? Currently my mindset has been 6s or bust, but I know that's obviously not a real strat to use on anything but a video game (and it doesn't really work in it either).

Why hasn’t a single batsman from England averaged 50+ in Test cricket in the last 50 years?

Even the great English batsmen like Graham Gooch, Alastair Cook or Kevin Pietersen were always seen one level below the likes of Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Viv Richards, Ricky Ponting, Virat Kohli etc

I think the last time England produced a batsman who was truly the “best in the world” was Ken Barrington and that was almost 50 years ago.

Barnwell's grade: The move of the offseason? Why I'm optimistic about Cam Newton

The idea that Newton hasn't been valuable since his 2015 MVP campaign is a product of selective memory. Here's what Pats fans can expect.

from www.espn.com - TOP https://ift.tt/3i8QZ4V
via IFTTT

New on SI: How Should Fantasy Owners Prepare for Cam Newton as a New England Patriot?

SI Fantasy & Gambling analyst Ben Heisler takes a look at how Cam Newton’s skill set will factor in with New England's offense.

In a move that

felt for weeks like the worst kept secret in the National Football League, the New England Patriots have solidified their quarterback position by signing free agent Cam Newton to a one-year deal.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen, the contract is a highly incentivized one-year deal. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport says the deal can reach as high as $7.5 million in 2020.

While the signing of Newton does not guarantee the starting quarterback spot, if the 31-year old former MVP is healthy coming off multiple leg and shoulder surgeries, it would make little to no sense to even bring him in.

How did Cam Newton end up with the Patriots?

Back on March 21, SI Gambling analyst Frankie Taddeo wrote about the betting market available for Cam Newton’s next landing spot. Sure enough, his call on the Patriots at odds of +340 turned out to be right on the money.

After the Panthers released Newton and the Patriots did not select a QB in the 2020 draft, the likelihood of Newton arriving in Foxboro became far more likely.

His likely top competitor for the starting gig is Jarrett Stidham, a fourth-round pick in 2019 who, like Newton, also played at Auburn. He threw only four passes his rookie season, leaving fantasy owners perplexed that the Patriots would even remotely consider him as the Week 1 starter.

Additionally, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has thought highly of Newton’s talent and skillset for years.

“I think when you’re talking about mobile quarterbacks—guys that are tough to handle, can throw, run, make good decisions—I would put him at the top of the list.”

Cam Newton Fantasy Impact:

Newton missed the final two games of the 2018 season with a shoulder injury that had likely been bothering him since Week 8 of the season. Despite fighting through pain, Newton was excellent from Weeks 1-12, throwing for 2,699 passing yards and 22 TDs, while rushing for 417 yards and four TDs.

Up until the final quarter of the season, Newton was actually the QB4 in fantasy behind only Patrick Mahomes (NFL MVP), Drew Brees, and Matt Ryan. His quarterback rating was 103.7, nearly 10 points higher than his career average of 94.2.

Newton went on to finish the 2018 season as the QB14 in fantasy, but with his impressive play from Weeks 1-12, he was looked at in fantasy circles as an ideal bounce-back candidate for 2019. It just never happened.

He played two games, threw for 572 yards with 0 TDs, and an interception; ending his stoic Panthers career with a thud. He later went on injured reserve with multiple operations on his right shoulder and left foot.

How does Newton Fit with the Patriots’ Offense?

Again, with the caveat that Newton is healthy, Newton has the chance to thrive in Josh McDaniels’ quick-decision, run-heavy offense.

The Patriots feature multiple running backs in Sony Michel, James White and Rex Burkhead, as well as an excellent slot receiver in Julian Edelman; who has seen an average of 154 targets in seasons where he’s played all 16 games. If Newton can regain his 2018 completion percentage (67.9%), by far the highest of his career, he should get in sync with Edelman rather quickly

New England also spent a first-round pick two seasons ago on receiver N’Keal Harry, who struggled to find any consistency in his rookie season. Even before the Patriots signed Newton, Harry was one of SI Fantasy analyst Matt De Lima’s late-round fliers heading into 2020.

One area both Tom Brady and Newton share is their ability to convert on quarterback sneaks. Back in October of 2019, Nora Princiotti of the Boston Globe discussed the Patriots’ affinity to sneak the ball at the highest rate in the NFL:

“Since 2015, (Brady) has rushed with 3 or fewer yards to go a total of 38 times, behind only Carolina’s Cam Newton (101 attempts) and the Chargers’ Tyrod Taylor (39) among quarterbacks. Brady has converted 84 percent of those attempts, to Newton’s 83 percent and Taylor’s 62 percent.”

Where Will Newton Go in Fantasy Drafts?

At the moment, Newton was being drafted as the QB36, or at position 292 in fantasy drafts. In essence, he wasn’t being signed unless you were in a two-quarterback league, or perhaps a deep 14 or 16-team league.

That obviously changes now that he’s in New England.

My expectation is Newton moves from QB36 up to as high as QB20, currently occupied by Philip Rivers of the Colts. He should land somewhere in the QB20-25 range, surrounded by the likes of Drew Lock, Sam Darnold, Jimmy Garoppolo, and Kirk Cousins.

In a matter of hours, Cam Newton will have gone from an undrafted fantasy free agent to a late-round flier pick with upside. The hype is very much real now that New England has an answer at their most important position.

Thoughts on Hansie for SA fans

We see Hansie's name being dragged through the mud, again and again, decade and more after his punishment and subsequent ban from the game. The crime was heinous. A SA captain admitted to fixing cricket games in India and asking the same from his fellow teammates - a few who did oblige.

The man himself was one of the best captains SA produced, immensely popular. And made a/some horrible mistake/s.

But, he did admit to it. Yes, not immediately. But, in the aftermath, he did. And it opened a pandora of worms. It exposed Azharuddin, Jadeja, Mongia, bunch of Pakistani cricketers in Salim Malik and the likes.

Remember, SA Cricket board rubbished the claims and so did Hansie initially, so this would have brushed under the carpet the same way Waugh and Warne claims were. In a sense, Hansie's confession first to Ali Bacher, then to the world was huge to bring out the depth of how deep rooted this really was.

Hansie made a mistake. He admitted it. Have many (particularly SA nationals/fans) still havent forgiven him?

No indulging in whataboutism but Jadeja is a regular making money giving his thoughts on the game. Azhar is president of the Hyderabad Cricket Association and apparently had a movie whitewashing him of all crimes (which apparently didnt do too well).

Isnt it time to forgive him too?

P.S. Not talking abt Hansie's death as that shouldnt be the reason to forgive him but may he rest in peace.

Has cricket to be played in covid-19.

Hello all,

Firstly, thanks for a very good response and also for sharing your sincere thoughts.

As a sort of a brainwave, I thought about it long and hard to find out as to why cricket is going to be played in covid-19, despite no gate money for the respective cricket board.

One thing that escaped us all from the comments seen is the fact that, even though there is no gate money, lets understand that tv endorsements viewed by audience will generate a great amount of revenue for the board and especially, with many people working from home, one would see a lot of advertising on television. Besides, as we know, online advertising has taken a leap during covid-19. The tv channels that have been given the rights to broadcast would be sharing the revenue with the board.

This is my understanding, but anyone wants to say anything different, please feel free to join the forum discussion.

Hope you all enjoyed this topic of discussion.

Cheers

How do I practice cricket?

I live in Canada and there are mostly gravel fields in parks. Where I live a cricket pitch is too far and it is very hard to go to far because I can't drive. A leather ball doesn't bounce on gravel. Which ball do I use instead of an original cricket ball that bounces on gravel like a leather ball and has about the same weight?

Hayden

Tamim

Sangakkara

Tendulkar

Lara

Andy Flower (wk)

Flintoff

Wasim Akram

Rashid Khan

Shane Bond

Steyn

If I need another spinner I will either get Vettori or open with Williamson and replace Hayden (& Bond ofc) with Warne

With all the 2020-21 Australian state squads announced who are your candidates to have have a breakout season

All the state squads here

Here are a few of the players I think that could have breakout seasons:

Jason Sangha (NSW) - Sangha is entering his third season for NSW. Sangha now 20 years old has had a reasonable amount of experience for a player of his age with 14 FC matches. Last season he was very good in NSW premier cricket averaging 82 in First Grade and scoring 900 runs @ 65 in all formats.

Nathan McSweeney (Queensland) - In his First-Class debut in 2018 he scored 35 off 179. From the games, I have watched him he really seems to have a solid technique that could make him a future test player. He has only played 5 FC games to date. In Premier Cricket last season he scored 787 runs @ 56. If his FC debut is anything to go by he clearly knows how to bat long periods of time and if he can make big scores next season he could convert that into becoming a player for the future.

Tom Andrews (Tasmania) - With Australia on the lookout for a second spinner, I think Andrews could fill that role if he develops. He is going to have a tough time because Tasmania's home pitches are generally seam friendly. If he can get good management at Tasmania then he could really develop. He is someone that I think could learn a lot from watching how someone like SOK went about his business in Sheffield Shield. He is someone that I think has a similar skill set to SOK (not saying he will be as good as him).

Will Sutherland (Victoria) - In 5 FC games he has taken 18 wickets @ 17 with 2 5 wicket hauls. With Tremain and Siddle no longer at Victoria, I expect Will to get a lot of games for Victoria next season. He is also someone that has batting potential. In the One Day Cup last season he got 2 50s. He is really a player that could develop into a good bowling all-rounder in all formats.

Video Game suggestions?

hi guys! Anyone have any cricket video game suggestions for xbox one?

I’ve been playing Don Bradman Cricket but that’s getting a bit dated from xbox 360.

I know there’s Ashes Cricket and Cricket 19 but didn’t know which is a better game.

Ideally I’m looking for a better career player experience. And it’d be nice to have the actual players names but i think that could be fixed with any roster update so not a big deal..

Anyways, really hope to get a great new game out of this! thanks in advance

Decision of cricket to be played in covid-19, right or wrong.

Cricket is about to start in covid 19 with West Indies in England, but there is a case of ace bowler, Jofra Archer catching the bug. Pakistan who would be touring England next has already 5 cases of players contracting the bug.

Even myself being a cricket crazy guy, it begs the question whether cricket has to be played in covid-19, as the respective cricket boards are not going to earn any gate money, as cricket is going to be played in front of empty crowds. This is like putting cricket at risk.

In-Focus: Muttiah Muralitharan Bowling Technique

It is hard to forget what Muttiah Muralitharan has done as an international bowler. If there is one thing about him that has been discussed as wildly as his incredible bowling stats and the never-ending controversies, it is his unique bowling technique.

The way Muralitharan bowled was an exciting sight to watch. The sideways swift to the bowling crease, the roar in his eyes, which is followed by a release that made him the prey to many controversies. Every time the Sri Lankan wrist spinner travelled to a non-Asian country, he came back with scars, which only made him grow quick. Nothing stopped him from becoming what he became: the legendary bowler, whose numbers are unbreakable. It was quite an unquenchable journey he had – filled with golds and wounds.

So, we thought we would come up with another article in Muttiah Muralitharan series of posts. This time, it will be one of our in-focus pieces, on Muralitharan’s bowling techniques and the variations he used to bowl. Let’s dive into those without taking any more time.

The Bowling techniques

Embed from Getty Images

Gripping

  • Like any other off-spinner, Muralitharan used his index finger to grip the ball.
  • But as a wrist spinner, his action was completely different from an off-spinner.
  • The primary differentiator is the release of the ball. He releases the ball from the back of the hand like a leg spinner.

Shoulder rotation

  • He used a normal rotation for an off-spinning delivery.
  • And, a wide rotation of the shoulder to produce doosra.

Follow-through

  • The arc of his bowling arm gets complete in the left side of his left leg for the off-spin and top spin.
  • Whereas for doosra, the arc from his right-hand reaches in between his two legs.

Run-up

  • The Sri Lankan legend used his sideways run-up to create momentum on the crease.
  • A little bit of longer run-up will be used by Murali when he plans to bowl quicker deliveries.

Bowling Variations

Embed from Getty Images

Off-spin

  • The off-break had been his stock delivery, which used to turn towards the right-hander.
  • The ball gets released from the back of the thumb.
  • He has produced two types of off-spin.
  • Vertical seam – the seam lands first and provides extraordinary spin after pitching.
  • Scrambled seam – Here any part of the ball can land, which creates turn and skidding is possible if the sides of the ball lands first on the pitch.

Doosra

  • The doosra spins in the opposite direction of an off-break. That means, it turns away from a right-handed batsman.
  • Muralitharan invented it after five years from his debut match.
  • This variation increased the wicket-taking option for Murali.
  • This variation of bowling made him lethal. Batsmen were having troubles while facing the ball.
  • At times, he had used the scrambled seam and vertical seam for bowling doosras too.

Top spin

  • In this variation, the ball comes from the top of the index finger.
  • Here the ball falls faster and earlier than the standard delivery.
  • Murali tries to bowl it higher so that the ball will get a dip at the pitching.
  • This type of delivery does turn but not as much as off-break.
  • But it will bounce more than any other of his variations.

Other variations

Pace Variations

  • The mix of pace had been the key for the Sri Lankan off-spinner.
  • He used to bowl between 75 -90 kmph.
  • The pace variation helped him to stop batsmen in making use of their feet down the pitch.

Side of the wicket

  • More than over the wicket angle, Muralitharan loved to bowl from around-the-wicket.
  • It helped him to get LBW as he spins a lot.
  • The probability of getting LBW when he bowled from over-the-wicket was less because of the enormous turn he possessed.
  • Especially his doosras were more effective when bowled from around-the-wicket.

To wrap up,

Hope you have learned a bit of Muralitharan’s bowling techniques and

Added to what we have said above, when it comes to accuracy in the length and line, Muralitharan is the master of it. No surprise he still rules the bowling cards across formats.

My greatest strength is to be able to run in with my eyes closed and deliver a ball exactly where I wanted to pitch,” Muralitharan once said to Kumar Sangakkara

Is Herschelle Gibbs the most Underrated Test Opener ever?

No one ever mention Herschelle Gibbs when Great Test Openers are discussed. Even while selecting All Time XIs most people select Gary Kirsten.

Gary Kirsten Stats as Opener

Matches - 84

Innings - 149

Runs - 5726

Average - 41.79

Centuries - 14

Half Centuries -28

Now Herschelle Gibbs as an Opener

Matches - 68

Innings - 116

Runs - 5242

Average - 47.22

Centuries - 14

Half Centuries - 21

He averaged 46.1 in 36 Tests at Home and 48.45 in 32 Tests in Away Games. Pretty Great for an opener.

Justin Langer is definitely considered as one of the great Test Openers and He scored 5116 Runs in 65 Tests at an average of 48.22.

Gibbs Averages more as an Opener than Saeed Anwar(47.10), Chris Gayle(43.11), Mark Taylor(43.49), Michael Slater(42.83),Alastair Cook(44.86), Graham Gooch(43.88), Gordon Greenidge(45.10), Michael Vaughan(45.48), Bill Lawry(47.10), Sanath Jayasuriya(41.48) and Desmond Haynes(42.45).

Yet the above mentioned names are at least talked about when Good or Great Openers are discussed. But Herschelle Gibbs is never mentioned.

With a Cut-off of 2500 Runs Scored in Away Games. Herschelle Gibbs is 5th(48.45) on the list of players with the Best Averages. The 4 Players above him are Jack Hobbs(59.16), Graeme Smith(55.88), Len Hutton(54.53) & Sunil Gavaskar(52.92) which are definitely All Time Great. But being 5th on that kind of list should at least get your name mentioned when Great Openers are talked about.

Only reason I can think of for Gibbs being not mentioned in those conversations is his overall low average of 42 after 90 Tests. But as an opener he was one of the Best and deserves his place among the Best Openers in Test Cricket.

White ball cricket: Eoin Morgan or Kevin Pietersen?

Simple question, go?

I’ll add some context I guess.

I was thinking about whether KP gets into the current ODI side...or let’s say the side that won the World Cup anyway. And it’s difficult, Roy and Bairstow are possibly the best opening partnership in the world, Root is up there with the best anchors in the world and averages over 50, Stokes is Stokes, Buttler is Buttler so that leaves one spot, Morgan vs Pietersen?

I’d also add, think about this one, really think about it. I think natural assertion is ‘well, he’s KP, of course he gets in’ but upon thinking further, I found it’s really not that simple....

Also for those who love stats, Morgan’s average is 39.7, KPs is 40.7, save you a google search but there’s more to it than that.
