Why hasn’t a single batsman from England averaged 50+ in Test cricket in the last 50 years?

Even the great English batsmen like Graham Gooch, Alastair Cook or Kevin Pietersen were always seen one level below the likes of Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Viv Richards, Ricky Ponting, Virat Kohli etc

I think the last time England produced a batsman who was truly the “best in the world” was Ken Barrington and that was almost 50 years ago.
