Mumbai Indians have held the prestigious IPL title 4 times in their hands. They have always been the team that produces quality talent, and that list heavily includes bowlers. Jasprit Bumrah, Lasith Malinga, Hardik Pandya, Rahul Chahar, and many more grabbed the eyeballs while performing for MI.
But just like every other team, few batsmen make scoring runs against the men in blue a cakewalk. Here we look at the top 5 batsmen who have succeeded against the robust bowling lineup of MI in the past.
5. Chris Gayle (664 runs, 18 matches)
This marquee player of the Indian Premier League has its name registered in every record book. Chris Gayle hammers any opponent he is up against, but Mumbai Indians turn out to be one of his favorite opponents if we look at the records.
664 runs in just 18 matches at an average of 41.50 is quite a remarkable achievement. The strike of 134.14 is quite good for any other player, but it is pretty mediocre as per the big man’s standard.
4. MS Dhoni (679 runs, 35 matches)
MS Dhoni is the fulcrum of Chennai Super Kings and will continue to be as long as he plays for the franchise. The clash of CSK and MI is often referred to as ‘El Clasico of IPL,‘ and the Ranchi lad has always delivered in the big game.
Dhoni has scored 679 runs in 31 innings at an average of 33.95, along with the strike rate of nearly 130 against Mumbai Indians. His best score of 63 against MI came in a losing cause when Chennai failed to chase 149 in IPL 2013 final.
3. AB de Villiers (711 runs, 22 matches)
‘Mr. 360’ holds the 3rd spot in our list. ABD has played for Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) and Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL. The South African sensation became fans’ favorite when he donned the red jersey of RCB. Playing against Mumbai takes the best out of ABD if we go by the records.
The star RCB batsmen have piled up 711 runs in 22 matches at a stunning average of 47.40, the highest on our list. Not only this, the strike rate of 146.40 and the highest score of 133 is the icing on the cake. Villiers will most probably take over the top spot on the list in the next few IPL seasons.
2. Shikhar Dhawan (733 runs, 21 matches)
‘Gabbar’ of World Cricket is a sight to behold whenever he gets going. The same is the case in the Indian Premier League as well. The southpaw has a tremendous record against every team, but Mumbai Indians hold a special place in his heart, be it playing for them or against them.
The left-handed batsman who played for MI in his initial years now loves to tear them apart. 733 runs in 21 matches at an average of 45.81 shows how much he loves to play against his former franchise. Don’t be surprised to see him climbing up the list in the next few seasons as he still has many years of cricket left in him.
1. Suresh Raina (818 runs, 32 matches)
No prizes for guessing who would be sitting at the top of the ladder. Raina has over 5000 runs in his IPL career, which clearly shows how vital he is to the success of Chennai Super Kings. The left-handed batsman is the only one to score over 800 runs against the men in blue.
Raina has amassed 811 runs at an average of 31.46 and a healthy strike rate of 140.79 in 32 matches against Mumbai Indians. He could have had more runs to his name if he had not missed the 13th edition of IPL, held in UAE.
Others who could break into the top 5 very soon
Virat Kohli (628 runs, 26 matches)
Ajinkya Rahane (591 runs, 21 matches)
KL Rahul (580 runs, 12 matches)
Manish Pandey (578 runs, 18 matches)
