The seemingly forgotten purpose of the opening batsman.

Listening to the commentary today for Aus vs India. They spoke a lot about how good Pucovski played, and they are now talking about how good Smith looks compared to the first 2 tests. They are coming up with a lot of reasons, mindset, technique adjustment, etc.

One of the things an opening batsman is tasked with is to hold the crease to protect the middle order. They don't seem to have noticed that Pucovskis knock has allowed Smith to come in and face an older ball. When Steve Smith has come out to bat:

  • 1st test, 1st innings: 16.6 overs
  • 1st test, 2nd innings: 19.5 overs
  • 2nd test, 1st innings: 12.5 overs
  • 2nd test, 2nd innings: 17.5 overs
  • 3rd test, 1st innings: 34.2 overs
