3 Things We Learned From ‘KKR vs MI’ game – IPL 2020

Dinesh Karthik won the toss and asked Mumbai Indians to bat first. Rohit Sharma loves facing Kolkata Knight Riders, and he scored runs for fun yesterday. Hitman looked in great touch during his 80-run knock, which included three fours and six sixes. His partnership with Suryakumar Yadav gave Mumbai Indians a great platform.

At one point, it was looking like the men in blue could easily reach 200-220. But a combination of wrong decisions made by Mumbai Indians and good bowling by Narine and Mavi meant that Mumbai Indians ended up scoring 195 runs.

KKR’s strength is their batting but chasing 196 against a bowling unit as good as Mumbai’s was always tough. They lost their openers for cheap, and the run rate kept creeping up to the 12s and 13s. Dinesh Karthik, Nitish Rana, got off to good starts but didn’t capitalize.

All of Mumbai’s bowlers were economical and took wickets, but the pick of the bunch was Jasprit Bumrah, who showed his class by picking up the crucial wickets of Morgan and Russell in the same over. Mumbai Indians notched up a 49-run win, which puts them on top of the IPL table.

Let us now take a look at 3 things we learned from this game:

Mumbai break yet another record:

Mumbai Indians have many records to their name over the history of the IPL. They have won the most number of IPL; they have the bowler with the most number of wickets in the competition’s history. The list goes on.

On Wednesday, they broke another record. They became the first team to beat another team 20 times. Although KKR are 2-time champions, they have struggled against MI. With this win, the H2H record between the sides is 20-6.

Form is temporary; class is permanent:

Jasprit Bumrah had a rare bad game against Chennai Super Kings in the season opener. He conceded 43 runs in his quota of 4 overs. It is safe to say that Jasprit is the world’s best bowler in all formats of the game, and he proved his worth against KKR.

The Ahmedabad-born pacer was simply sensational during his first 3 overs. He just gave 5 runs and picked up 2 important wickets of Morgan and Russell. Although he shipped 27 runs off his last over, he still ended up with a run rate of 8.

Tinkering to do for KKR:

KKR faced a massive loss against MI in their first match of the campaign. Karthik blamed the result on players being rusty, but I reckon it could be much more than that. They need to figure out their batting line up before its too late.

They have the likes of Rahul Tripathi on the bench, who can come in for Nikhil Naik and open the innings for the Knight Riders. Narine, who is an inconsistent batsman, can bat lower down the order instead.
