A quick one from me this time. Title says it all, really: in this post, I'll be comparing all of England's ODI all-rounders throughout the years. Minimum requirements are 1000 runs and 20 wickets.
For the batting, I'll take the player's batting average and strike rate, find the mean and standard deviation of those values for every batsman who scored 1000 runs or more during that player's ODI career and use that to find an adjusted average and strike rate for the player in question (assuming a baseline average of 30 with a standard deviation of 10 and a baseline SR of 80 with a standard deviation of 10). I'll then take the geometric mean of the adjusted average and strike rate to assign the player a batting rating (BatRat). Note that for the purposes of this analysis, I am not taking batting position into consideration (so no distinction will be made between, say, openers and middle-order batsmen).
For the bowling, there are a few ways to go about it. I've decided that taking the geometric mean of the adjusted values for bowling average, strike rate and economy rate to assign a 'bowling rating' (lower being better) will be the method used here. I feel as if WPM in ODIs unfairly advantages bowlers who are bowled more for whatever reason (whether it's that they're trusted more or simply that they get through their allotment of ten before the other side is all out) so I'll ignore it for this particular post. The adjustments will be assuming an average of 30 with an s.d. of 5, a strike rate of 36 with an s.d. of 5 and an economy rate of 5 with an s.d. of 0.5.
Like with the batting order, some may question the fact that no distinction is being made between attacking bowlers and holding bowlers. The problem is that Statsguru (to my knowledge) doesn't allow you to break down stats by powerplay or by specific overs. I could distinguish between opening bowlers and first and second change, but for an all-rounder analysis, I feel as if this level of specificity is unnecessary. Besides, I still need a decent sample size to compare bowlers from a player's era, given that the same 20 wickets restriction will apply. That being said, I will be distinguishing between pace bowlers and spin bowlers.
The all-rounder rating will simply be the geometric mean of the batting rating and the reciprocal of the bowling rating. The list of players will be ordered from highest all-rounder rating to lowest. The purpose of this analysis is not to make any definitive statements regarding who England's best ODI all-rounder of all time is, but merely to present one possible method by which the candidates may be compared. There no doubt exist other (and possibly better) methods to compare these players which might end up arriving at different conclusions to the ones this post arrives at, and I for one would be very interested in reading about them if people want to use their own methodology and post it here for us all to see and discuss. I can only hope that this post provides food for thought even if you ultimately disagree with the conclusions drawn from it.
Player | Adjusted batting average | Adjusted batting SR | BatRat | Adjusted bowling average | Adjusted bowling SR | Adjusted economy | BowlRat | AllRoundRat |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Andrew Flintoff | 29.53 | 93.72 | 52.61 | 24.78 | 32.15 | 4.55 | 15.36 | 1.851 |
Graeme Hick | 35.92 | 83.52 | 54.77 | 28.43 | 32.11 | 5.76 | 17.39 | 1.775 |
Joe Root | 45.16 | 79.32 | 59.85 | 41.84 | 44.79 | 5.87 | 22.24 | 1.640 |
Ben Stokes | 34.74 | 85.53 | 54.51 | 37.39 | 40.45 | 5.60 | 20.38 | 1.635 |
Paul Collingwood | 32.63 | 80.28 | 51.18 | 35.33 | 41.65 | 5.02 | 19.48 | 1.621 |
Graham Gooch | 37.39 | 72.77 | 52.16 | 38.21 | 43.81 | 5.33 | 20.74 | 1.586 |
Ian Botham | 18.13 | 88.68 | 40.10 | 29.20 | 35.96 | 4.86 | 17.22 | 1.526 |
Ravi Bopara | 24.62 | 75.80 | 43.20 | 35.43 | 43.04 | 4.81 | 19.43 | 1.491 |
Chris Woakes | 17.19 | 82.52 | 37.66 | 29.00 | 34.12 | 5.19 | 17.25 | 1.478 |
Moeen Ali | 15.66 | 93.43 | 38.25 | 37.92 | 43.67 | 5.34 | 20.68 | 1.360 |
Here's the list if we restrict it only to players who bowl at least five overs per match on average:
Player | BatRat | BowlRat | AllRoundRat |
---|---|---|---|
Andrew Flintoff | 52.61 | 15.36 | 1.851 |
Ben Stokes | 54.51 | 20.38 | 1.635 |
Ian Botham | 40.10 | 17.22 | 1.526 |
Chris Woakes | 37.66 | 17.25 | 1.478 |
Moeen Ali | 38.25 | 20.68 | 1.360 |
Once again, I am not going to claim that this is the definitive ranking of England's ODI all-rounders (though I personally do agree that Flintoff is at the top by quite a long distance); do with these stats what you will (after all, there's no guarantee that my methodology is flawless).
