Alternative to Auctions -: Transfer Windows with a wage cap

Auctions should be removed in IPL, and players should have the opportunity to choose whatever franchise they want to play for, just like in football. Non contracted players should be approached by the franchise. The difference between the football and cricket transfer windows will be that the teams would need to operate under a wage cap to maintain a balance and keep the competition fair.

Players are not commodities, they are people, their preference is ignored completely, and sometimes because of an auction, the players might end up teams that would hamper their growth and performance. Let's take the example of Lynn, he's an incredible player, he warmed the bench for the entire season for just 2 crore. If there was no auction system, he could have taken a small paycut at KKR, or gone to a different franchise for a higher wage than 2 crore where he did not have to compete with someone like QdK. Another example is DK with MI in 2013, he had an incredible season of over 500 runs, he even started playing for India. MI could have just given him a wage increase within the wage cap in 2014, keeping both the player and franchise happy. But because of auction dynamics, he was left in the wilderness being moved around every year, affecting his growth and performance, I understand the enormity of the effect is debatable.

People will say that this will bring an alleged monopoly, but it won't because, someone like MI will have to keep renegotiating the contracts with good players in the team with their limited budget, if Surya is earning 3 crore, he would want 10 crore, if MI give him that contract, no new players would come in the MI squad. Meanwhile other teams, that are struggling, will keep bringing in new talent and making their team stronger by luring players in, keeping the competition interesting.

Transfer window system would also bring the loyalty out of the players, whether they stick by the team when the team is struggling, and we will see players play for the team that they actually want to play for. This is how you develop a club culture, identity and rivalries, imagine how moronic football would be if it had mega auctions every 3 years. Would you still have the same love and passion for your team in that dynamic? Exactly.
