Is South Africa considered to be a better away team than a home team? I've having been having this question in my mind since re-watching the sandpaper gate documentary in YouTube "Crossing the line". In the documentary, Mark Nicholas mentions how South Africa has a better record against Australia at Australia than at home. Now this means it could probably be applied only to test cricket, a format where South Africa dominated from early 2000s to mid 2010s. But then I remembered their record in ICC tournaments. Their best 50-over world cup campaigns came in Australia and New Zealand (1992 & 2015), England (1999), and West Indies (2007). Their only world cup campaign at home was a failure as they were eliminated in the group stages due to miscalculation of D/L method. Their biggest achievement in ICC tournaments is the knockout trophy they won in 1998 in Bangladesh. Their only champions trophy campaign at home ended with them finishing bottom of their group. Their best tournament held at home was 2007 world t20, where they finished third in their super 8's group due to inferior net run rate. I know these are very limited stats, but it kind of shows that South Africa fair better at overseas than at home. What do you guys think? Feel free to share your opinions. Thank you.
