In the 2019 Ashes, Smith scored 144, 142, 92, 211, 82, 80, 23. 774 runs from 7 innings at an average of 110.57. Three centuries and three fifties. Let's go through each innings and how he got out.
144 - Bowled by Broad, slogging. Australia was 9 down.
142 - Caught behind off aggressive cover drive. Australia was 4 down with a lead of 241.
92 - Returned after being hit in the neck on 80 and slogged 3 fours. Caught plumb lbw, looked rattled from the head knock.
211 - Reverse sweeping caught at gully off Root.
82 - Caught at deep cover, slogging.
80 - LBW, falling over trying to turn to the leg side
23 - Ball on middle stump from Broad, Out Caught at leg slip/gully turning to leg side
Pakistan Series
4 - Bowled by Yasir trying to hit to the leg side.
36 - Inside edge trying to swipe from the off to leg side, caught by the keeper
NZ Series
43 - Caught at leg gully from a rising delivery from Wagner, trying to hit through square leg
16 - Caught at deep square leg from a rising delivery from Wagner, trying to hit on the up through square leg
85 - Caught at gully from a very nasty short rising ball from Wagner. Unlucky to get out defending
7 - Caught at deep square leg from a rising delivery from Wagner
63 - Caught at 2nd slip from a benign ball from de Grandhomme, edged.
India Series
1 - Edged an interesting ball from Ashwin that looked like it turned, caught at first slip.
0 - Glanced a ball on leg stump to leg slip. Looked like a brain fade since he knew the leg slip was there.
Summary
Looks like Smith has a weakness to the short rising delivery and can't control hook/leg glance shots.
In my opinion he needs to avoid playing the shot or deliberately hit down on it so there's no chance of being caught. When he rolls the wrist as shown in his duck, he made the ball travel roughly parallel to the ground instead of hitting down on it.
