Which players' careers could have turned out very differently if not for injury?
I'll start with a few:
- Tim Paine - if it weren't for his finger injuries, he could've a) pushed Haddin out of the side b) been a much better batsman and C) taken over as captain when Clarke retired. There's also a case though that his extraordinary experience of comeback made him the perfect man to take the captaincy when he did
- James Pattinson - when he debuted he seemed to be the complete fast bowler: express pace, conventional and reverse swing. His awful back injuries have meant that he's barely played and probably isn't the bowler he used to be (though he still tears up in domestic cricket)
- Shane Watson - he deserves recognition as an awesome white ball player and a handy Test player, but could he have been more if he wasn't constantly in and out of the side with injury? He had some technical issues of course and arguably was played out of position, but you have to wonder if some consistency in fitness might have contributed to greater consistency of performance
