First off, obligatory apology to my kiwi bros for any PTSD caused.
So since the world cup last year, we had about 3 super overs in the NZ T20s with india and england, very close matches between SA and england (1,2 runs difference) and we had about 12? super overs in the IPL
What i’m thinking is, given that now super overs has become a relevant thing, has it had a ripple effect?
Knowing that a tie is not a dead end and it’s a second chance for either team to win, will batsmen be more willing to take it to the last few balls knowing they can still win eventually and thus resulting in more close finishes and more super overs?
Also, would the fear of knowing that they can still lose a match from an easy position and lose in the super over make batsmen panic in last over finishes, resulting in even more super overs.
Moreover, with bowlers knowing that there is a super over, would they be considering bowling more defensively in a dead run chase given that even with set batsman and wickets in hand, keeping it tight can cause panic and lead to a tight finish or super overs, rather than go for wickets to restrict run scoring.
So my theory that simply the more super overs that happen, the number of super overs in future matches will exponentially increase.
This is just a thought, not backed by any stats so wondering what you guys feel about this
